  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best Tablet for Grading in Resolve

I use a Wacom in Resolve daily, in conjunction with the Resolve panels. The very first thing I do when hooking up ANY tablet is to remap the side buttons in the wacom configuration:

forward click = middle click

backward click = right click

Done & done. When I work in Resolve I use a small 4x6 tablet so it doesn't take up much space, and I have all the clicks I need, plus the added accuracy, speed, and ergonomic benefit of not trying to use a brick with buttons as an input device.

I don't use a Mac, so I don't know where exactly to remap Wacom parameters, but it works in Win & Linux.

On Mac it's done in the control panel for Wacom. But, as it was already mentioned many times, Mac doesn't allow "hover click". So, even with middle click remapped to forward click, it still impossible to use with Resolve on a Mac.

I've used a Wacom for 4 years now and have always been able to hover and click on my Macs. Not sure why you would have an issue there.

Hover click works just fine here too on my Macs. Not sure why people have an issue or what the issue might be... I use my Wacom more than any other input device (er... well, excluding the keyboard). The dual switch erasing ultra pen thingamajob works fine, so does the wider tip art pen and the 4-button puck (mouse equivalent). It takes some tweaking and dialing it in, but the puck is just a mouse and your wacom becomes the mouse pad. I still keep a Logitech mouse on my systems anyway. I've been using Wacom tablets for about 15 years. My first one was in about '96 or '97... the 6x9" ARTZ-II model. I still have it and it still works fine other than the latest drivers not supporting it. But it works in WinXP.

How? When I hover and click on "middle click" nothing happens. The only way "middle click" works is to click on the scene, which immediately takes you top that scene. So, how do you do "middle click" without clicking?

i use a wacom + tangent wave with resolve on a mac almost every day. I have the side buttons on the pen set to middle click and right click. hover click is enabled. never been an issue for me.

i just press the button, i don't tap down with the pen. if you're tapping down with the pen while holding that button, it would treat it as a middle click followed by a left click, which is what is taking you to the front of the shot.

Maybe you're having a driver issue? Have you updated to the latest drivers?

Are you saying, that you can "hover" over the reference shot, click the "middle click" on a pen and it will copy grade to the current shot? When I "hover" and "middle click", nothing happens.
"hover click is enabled". How do you enable it?

Yep, i'm hovering over the shot, clicking the side rocker assigned to middle click on the pen, and it copies the grade. The hover setting is under options in the Wacom panel of System Preferences. It should be set that way by default (I think). Have you tried assigning the middle click to the other button? maybe it's a defective pen?

I can confirm what Brandon is saying. I really don't know what else to say here... It just works. I'm using the medium sized Intuous3 at the moment and it works... Always has.

Aha, the "hover click" setting is under the Options settings. The default setting, at least for me, was "click and tap". I'll test it tomorrow and report back, but from the looks of it, it should work. Thanks for the info.

Wacom would be my recommendation as well. I used to use it with Tangent CP200 on Color, and it was a fantastic combo. Now I grade on Resolve with its panel, I had to go with a mouse instead. I just couldn't use the Wacom as comfortably as I wanted due to the size of the resolve panel. Maybe I'm too small of a guy :)

I'm happy to report, that the "hover click" setting in the Wacom preferences did the trick and it is possible to use Resolve with Wacom tablet after all. It is even possible to program the middle click to one of the four shortcut buttons.

See. we aren't as crazy as you might think... ;)
