BOXX has a new low end workstation that might serve well. What budget range are you looking at?

why on planet earth would you buy a red then? Sorry to be so blunt but quality is the whole reason for buying red. you should consider buying a sony ex1 for example. your workflow would speed up incredibly and you save a pile of cash. That camera produces incredible images with a very friendly workflow.

George, I hate to be blunt, but I really don't think you know what you are talking about. Thanks for the input, but a Sony EX1 with all the bells and whistles, will cost FAR more than a Red-One.
Why would I pay more money for less quality?
George, I hate to be blunt, but I really don't think you know what you are talking about.
First the G5 and crazy RAID configuration. Now you say a fully configured EX1 "will cost FAR more than a Red-One." WTF are you talking about?? :emote_whack:
An EX1 w/ a lens costs around $7K. A Red One body only costs $18K.
And BTW, this is a real names forum. I highly doubt your full last name is "B."
You're absolutely right Peter. I "don't" know what I'm talking about. I've been involved in FILM all my career of over 36 years, and THAT I "know" backwards and forwards, but now I'm trying to learn and move into this kind of digital camera equipment. This is WHY I'm asking questions and trying to learn, before I put out our hard-earned money into new equipment.
I "do" know what is required of our kind of photography by the companies we work for, what the limitations are, and what kinds of budgets we deal with. And, what we MUST do to satisfy them.
I thought you were talking about a different camera. A Sony EX1 does NOT produce anywhere near the kind of quality that is exceptable by our clients. The companies we work for have VERY high standards. That camera is a toy and would not even come close to accomplishing the kind of work we do.
The only camera I would consider as giving the Red-One and Scarlet any competition would be the Panasonic AJ-HDX900, which I've used. But, a new one of those, with all the additional equipment we would need, costs MUCH more than the Red-One and lots more than the Scarlet. And the quality of the images from the Panasonic don't even come close to those from the Red. Why pay more for less.
Are you SURE "you" know what you're talking about?
And, no offense intended, what I do with my name is MY business.
Have a nice day.
PS - If questions on this forum UPSET you, why do you answer them?
ok, no prob if you thought i was talkin about a different camera. now i have another question for you. which scarlet are you refering to? the scarlet 2/3? or the S35? the 2/3 should be out by the end of this year but the S35, i dont have a clue. I think a red one with the mx sensor upgrade might be the way for you to go. a good setup excluding glass would cost close to the panasonic you were referring to. include in your budget room for a $5000+ workstation. if you are willing to spend over 25k, ul need a good station to work out of. also if you want realtime playback of the r3ds (not a must) you will need a RED Rocket™ card. another 5 grand. If you are looking for extreme quality this will be the way to go. this will outperform the Panasonic on every level. Im only scratching the surface in terms of the amount of research you need to do before u purchase. If i were you i would find out when the next reducation seminar will be and attend. that should give u a good starting point.
Thanks for the info.
The Scarlet I'm considering is the 2/3, and I sure hope I don't have to wait until the end of this year. There are things we need to shoot this summer.
I also hope you're wrong about the cost of the workstation. $5,000+ is not acceptable. According to the research I've done, I can get a custom built PC set up for about $2,500+.
Why do I need a RED Rocket™ card?
Please realize, I am a independent, freelance, documentary film maker, so I am not rich and it's my own money. I MUST keep the cost down. We can handle $25-30,000.oo, but too much more than that is going to stretch our resources too far. We have to eat you know...ha,ha,ha!!
Thanks for the advise, and be well.
well the difference in price between the 2/3 and the red one is massive. you could get a solid starter setup with the red one for 25k but since you are looking at the 2/3 that brings costs way way down. you could get a tricked out 2/3 for 15k- 20k. but sorry to burst your bubble but the scarlet aint guna be out this summer, if i were you id hope for late fall at the VERY VERY best. im estimating to be puttin the camera in my hands around christmas. I cant stress enough though that you have weeks of research ahead of you before u jump into the red. No disrespect, u obviously know alot about film, but as far as digital you need to just research ALOT. read these forums everyday and ul learn real quick. happy buying and research!
Thanks again Jeremy.
Unless there is something I don't know regarding necessary equipment, and there probably is as you point out, my figures vastly differ from yours. The price difference is not "massive", and according to my calculations, there is no way I could be set to go for as little as 15-20k. I wish that were true. The Scarlet would come to approximately $32,000.oo and the Red-One about $37,000.oo. Especially considering the need for a RED Rocket™ card for my PC, which I'm still researching.
Yes, I do need to research and learn a great deal more about digital, but the basics of good cinematography remain the same regardless of the equipment. THAT, I do not need to learn fortunately.
Have a good one.
