  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BEST over the counter Windows PC ??

BOXX has a new low end workstation that might serve well. What budget range are you looking at?

why on planet earth would you buy a red then? Sorry to be so blunt but quality is the whole reason for buying red. you should consider buying a sony ex1 for example. your workflow would speed up incredibly and you save a pile of cash. That camera produces incredible images with a very friendly workflow.

I think he's just trying to protect himself but honestly, IT'S YOUR IDEAS THEY'll COPY; you certainly won't help your cause by a down resolution. Quite the opposite in fact. Along those lines, only present your material with a working title and your name because you can't copyright your title and it may be "acquired" otherwise. I learned the hard way. This business sucks.

These guys have made some very good suggestions for you to consider. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the input, but a Sony EX1 with all the bells and whistles, will cost FAR more than a Red-One.

Why would I pay more money for less quality?

To me personally, the Scarlet will offer a larger dynamic range and better low light performance. The EX1 didn't work as well at night for me in what I saw. This is in no way to say the EX1 is not a good camera, but the RED offering has other advantages to it.

I personally think out of the box the Scarlet is going to produce a better image, which is why I am buying one :)

George, I hate to be blunt, but I really don't think you know what you are talking about.

First the G5 and crazy RAID configuration. Now you say a fully configured EX1 "will cost FAR more than a Red-One." WTF are you talking about?? :emote_whack:

An EX1 w/ a lens costs around $7K. A Red One body only costs $18K.

And BTW, this is a real names forum. I highly doubt your full last name is "D."

You're absolutely right Peter. I "don't" know what I'm talking about. I've been involved in FILM all my career of over 36 years, and THAT I "know" backwards and forwards, but now I'm trying to learn and move into this kind of digital camera equipment. This is WHY I'm asking questions and trying to learn, before I put out our hard-earned money into new equipment.

I "do" know what is required of our kind of photography by the companies we work for, what the limitations are, and what kinds of budgets we deal with. And, what we MUST do to satisfy them.

I thought you were talking about a different camera. A Sony EX1 does NOT produce anywhere near the kind of quality that is exceptable by our clients. The companies we work for have VERY high standards. That camera is a toy and would not even come close to accomplishing the kind of work we do.

The only camera I would consider as giving the Red-One and Scarlet any competition would be the Panasonic AJ-HDX900, which I've used. But, a new one of those, with all the additional equipment we would need, costs MUCH more than the Red-One and lots more than the Scarlet. And the quality of the images from the Panasonic don't even come close to those from the Red. Why pay more for less.

Are you SURE "you" know what you're talking about?

And, no offense intended, what I do with my name is MY business.

Have a nice day.

PS - If questions on this forum UPSET you, why do you answer them?

In my experience, workstations from HP, Dell, and Apple are fairly solid. Of course any workstation you get is likely to have 90% the same components as others and it may hardly matter what brand name is on the front of the case, its still what you choose when you customize. I do like building my own systems but that's not for everyone.

ok, no prob if you thought i was talkin about a different camera. now i have another question for you. which scarlet are you refering to? the scarlet 2/3? or the S35? the 2/3 should be out by the end of this year but the S35, i dont have a clue. I think a red one with the mx sensor upgrade might be the way for you to go. a good setup excluding glass would cost close to the panasonic you were referring to. include in your budget room for a $5000+ workstation. if you are willing to spend over 25k, ul need a good station to work out of. also if you want realtime playback of the r3ds (not a must) you will need a red rocket card. another 5 grand. If you are looking for extreme quality this will be the way to go. this will outperform the Panasonic on every level. Im only scratching the surface in terms of the amount of research you need to do before u purchase. If i were you i would find out when the next reducation seminar will be and attend. that should give u a good starting point.

Thanks for the info.
The Scarlet I'm considering is the 2/3, and I sure hope I don't have to wait until the end of this year. There are things we need to shoot this summer.
I also hope you're wrong about the cost of the workstation. $5,000+ is not acceptable. According to the research I've done, I can get a custom built PC set up for about $2,500+.
Why do I need a Red Rocket card?
Please realize, I am a independent, freelance, documentary film maker, so I am not rich and it's my own money. I MUST keep the cost down. We can handle $25-30,000.oo, but too much more than that is going to stretch our resources too far. We have to eat you know...ha,ha,ha!!
Thanks for the advise, and be well.

It really depends on how much of a turn around you need, and how much REAL TIME editing/transcodes you need. R3D is a very intensive file that pretty much can eat up your whole machine, and you people tend to want to throw as much raw computing power at it as they can for faster results. a Red Rocket card could A. allow you to transcode into a easier to edit format at close to, or even real time. B. hopefully be supported in CS5 one day so that you get that acceleration in your edit too. With Premiere cs5, remember that the bread and butter of it will be the video card. but basically, the more powerful your system is the faster it's going to be, it's true 64 bit so anything you put in there is going to be taken advantage of. If budget is an issue I would build a nice 2500 dollar pc, moderate specs, and see if the performance makes you happy.

The nice thing about custom built vs over the counter is that your gonna be able to upgrade any component if you realize, oh no, this is way too slow for me after all! Let me upgrade the video card, or processor, or throw more ram in this thing.

as for building a proper red package, i've seen some very lean builds for around 25k, especially if you have all the accessories from your film shooting (heavy duty tripod, lesnes, follow focus, etc.) You could probably have a ready to shoot system for under 25k if you have a lot of that stuff already.

Thanks for the info.

well the difference in price between the 2/3 and the red one is massive. you could get a solid starter setup with the red one for 25k but since you are looking at the 2/3 that brings costs way way down. you could get a tricked out 2/3 for 15k- 20k. but sorry to burst your bubble but the scarlet aint guna be out this summer, if i were you id hope for late fall at the VERY VERY best. im estimating to be puttin the camera in my hands around christmas. I cant stress enough though that you have weeks of research ahead of you before u jump into the red. No disrespect, u obviously know alot about film, but as far as digital you need to just research ALOT. read these forums everyday and ul learn real quick. happy buying and research!

Thanks again Jeremy.

Unless there is something I don't know regarding necessary equipment, and there probably is as you point out, my figures vastly differ from yours. The price difference is not "massive", and according to my calculations, there is no way I could be set to go for as little as 15-20k. I wish that were true. The Scarlet would come to approximately $32,000.oo and the Red-One about $37,000.oo. Especially considering the need for a Red Rocket card for my PC, which I'm still researching.

Yes, I do need to research and learn a great deal more about digital, but the basics of good cinematography remain the same regardless of the equipment. THAT, I do not need to learn fortunately.

Have a good one.

how do u come to the conclusion that the scarlet 2/3 config will only be $5000 different from the red one??? The red one body is 17,500 the 2/3 is no more than 3 grand! besides that a full set of lenses for the red one is 19,000 and for the 2/3 its only 5000 dollors? where are you getting your figures from?

If you want to spend lots of money then get Intels new 6 core processor.

If you want to save a bit, wait for AMD's responce.

Personally I would go for AMD anyway, I have a vendetta against Intel and their overpriced energy efficient crap.

Intel = run best with Nvdia
AMD = run best with ATI

Nvdia = Roots come from gaming.
ATI = Roots come from game design.

Do the math, if you on a budget buy AMD with ATI and a decnent motherboard.

If your not on a budget then I suggest you go for the best and nothing less. You really can't go wrong.

My ideal setup for editing would be to have a server running the load of the program, then having a Decent graphics card powerhouse on your local machine.

Its all bollucks nowadays since ram is shared.
