  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best Nikon Lens?

Thanks, Nils

I'm not certain I understood how that mount work. When fix on the red can I use either Nikon lens and Leica or do I have to switch mount?
Did someone try it? Didn't find any thread about it!
Sorry to hi Jack that thread a little bit.
By the way using Nikon 35-50-85 F1.4 / 60mm micro Nikkor F2.8 (fantastic lens) and the 17/35 F2.8
17/35 and 85 are the one I use the most. The 85 is my favorite.
Cheers
Brice

... and I probably wouldn't buy before Jarred puts them on his list.

If you need long, fixed focal length lens, try the auto focus Nikon 180mm F2.8. You will be pleasantly surprised.

BUT, you MUST, and I mean MUST buy that Tokina 11-16mm zoom. What an amazing piece of glass. . . it truly is the bargain of a lifetime.

It looks like it doesn't have a manual iris ring?

For those wanting to use the Nikon G 14-24, you can get an EOS adapter for it with a manual iris ring lever here:

http://www.16-9.net/nikon_g/

For those wanting to use ANY G or DX series Nikon adapter without having to first purchase a EOS lens mount for your red, might I suggest

the Nikon GDX mount for RED from Long Valley Equipment.

I agree with Stephen, the Tokina 11-16 is a MUST PURCHASE!!! The 17-55 Nikon is killer.

I might turn my Leica R prototype mount for RED into a product but all I hear is talk, no one orders it. I had it finished about 10 months ago.

Stay tuned for more lens mount developments . . .

Leica R would be great, Canon FD would be great. I have never really understood why more mounts couldn't be sanctioned or why RED couldn't just make them themselves, thereby circumventing the warranty problem and increasing their revenue, even if only slightly. I've got a few FDs that I'm fairly sure would smoke on the RED, but they have to sit on the bench. By the way Douglas, I'm needing to update my RED Nikon mount with your upgrade - I assume you're still upgrading existing mounts, or are you just selling new ones?

good idea.. if someone wants to send us one to test out and if it passes ill give it the go ahead.

Two of the best Nikon has ever made are the 17-35 2.8 f/2.8 AF-S and 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S. Supposedly the new 14-24 and 24-70 replacements are even better but neither have aperture rings.

Add the 80-200 AFS IF ED and you are covered for all focal lengths. I have tested these against the best Nikon primes, and can not see any difference.
I keep a couple primes for ultra light weight or low light set ups.

Focus throw is the only drawback of these AF lenses. If you work alone, and take the time to check focus very carefully, it's fine.

I own 21 Nikon lenses, and use them regularly on my REDs.

My favorite Nikon zooms that I own:
14-24 f2.8, 17-35 f2.8, 28-70 f2.8, 80-200 f2.8 (I own all three models of the lens), and 50-300 f4.5 AIS. At some time in the near future I'll also be adding in the 200-400 zoom. Note: I also own a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 with a Nikon mount. It's my "go to" super wide zoom - it gets used a lot between 11mm and 14mm, where I usually go to the Nikon 14-24 - unless size/weight is an issue, then I stick with the 11-16.

I also own a wide range of Nikon primes, which I don't use anywhere near as often as the zooms. For long Nikon primes, my favorites I own are:

180mm f2.8 AIS, 400 f3.5 AIS

Because of the optical quality of the Nikon (and Tokina w/Nikon mount) wide zooms listed above, and because the genres I usually shoot call for zooms as the best lens type choice, my Nikon mid to wide primes just fill a niche as lightweight specialty lenses - there when I need them, but mostly just collect dust.

Thanks for mentioning that. I have the current version (70-200 VR) which doesn't have an aperture ring so I forgot that the previous model (which by the way has a little bit faster autofocus than the new one) has one.

80-200 f2.8 (I own all three models of the lens)

Seems like you've got some collecting to do; according to Thom Hogan (http://www.bythom.com/70200VRlens.htm) there have been at least six versions!! Seven if you count the current 70-200.

LOL - fortunately I spend a lot more time shooting than collecting, but yes, I'm a confirmed "lensaholic" :-)

The 80-200 Nikon zooms I own are the AF, AF-S, and AF-D. Optically they seem to produce similar results.

noct nikkor

noct nikkor

the nokt nikkor 58 mm f 1.2 is my favorite lens, though i doubt if you will find one. i bought it on ebay for way too much but at least got a good sample as published, which is not always the case on ebay. the nikkor 20 mm f 2.8 ais is also wondefull.

Good (nikonmount) zooms? Other than the fameous 17 - 35?

Good (nikonmount) zooms? Other than the fameous 17 - 35?

I know the 17 - 35 is supposedly brilliant, but is there a competing zoom to this one, but more like the range of (reds)18 - 50 , or 20 - 60 - 70 (which seems to cover a lot of what I would need for a running not - wanting - to - change - lens - operation...) - that could be recommended?

I see Gibby recommending the 28 - 70 which I suppose would cover more...any other zoomlenses in this range?

Remember the 1.4 crop makes the 17-35 act like a FF 25-50.

I would also love an 18-85. I'd buy the Red if it didn't weigh more than the camera. Nikon, as far as I know, does not cover this range in their high end glass. Anybody know better, or about other manufacturers?

Perfection would be a nikon lightweight zoom 18 - 85 with the same optical quality as the 17 -35 with a longer throw! (for about the same price, ha ha)

For doco work I find the 28 - 70 the most useful range.

Rob

Well you might give the Nikon DX 17-55 a try. Smaller, lighter, better range than the 17-35 and holds focus quite well. I got mine for about $1,200.

I second Doug re the 17-55. When I'm on the Nikon front with my Red, the 17-55 is my go to lens. It is brilliant, light-weight, sharp even wide open and decently built. Of course it's not a cinema lens -- and you'll need Doug's Nikon mount mod. But if I had to choose but one lens and had only 1200 to spend -- this would be it.
