  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best mounting solution for RED 5" Touch and a Top Handle

Don't have to worry about that - one weakness of the Swat rails is that over time the center portion gets squeezed resulting in far narrower profile in the center section. Even if the handle somehow loosen itself (which has not happened in over 1 year that I have been using this setup) the handle would not be able to come off until much further manual loosening is provided. At first I did not like the deformation of the Swat, but now I actually appreciate its security. Basically you will feel the handle being loose long before it is physically able to come off of the Swat rail...

I'm one of those "weirdos" who doesn't like mounting the monitor to the top handle.

However, what I do is use a Red Bolt-On SWAT Rail Clamp and attach SWAT Rails to the front and back of the top plate as well as the left side. I also using an additional SWAT Rail on an Accessory Attachment Bracket.

This provides a bunch of flexibility in where you put your monitor. Front of the top of camera, back of the top of camera, camera left, on rail offset camera left. Also, if I grab a Dogbone A I can drop the monitor down lower if I desire that. The way it works via the Accessory Attachment Bracket allows me to still self operation and look at marks on my follow focus if necessary.

Trevor-
Do you happen to have a pictures of the Pelican that you keep your camera in? Been trying to work out my options for keeping a more fully rigged camera in a hard case.
Thanks,

-Harry

I'll take a photo for you. Nothing glamorous, but I use the padded dividers in Pelican 1510 cases. One holds my camera body, four 90w/h Anton Bauer batteries, and my top handle/LCD. If I travel, I carry that case on. The other holds my media, an external drive, Mini RED STATION, cables, second monitor etc. and this goes through checked baggage. Then my lenses are in their own pelican case that can also be checked.

I'll try and take a couple of photos when I get my EPIC. Been camera-less now for a week since I sent my Scarlet in for EPIC-X trade-in.

Phil. Looks like you switched to the ofocus. How are you finding that? Thinking of getting one so it will be ready when my schneiders come home :) is it hard to pull focus on still lenses with it because of the increased ratio.

Actually I made a bigger switch even :) That's the OConnor CFF-1, and the big switch is I've pretty much using 19mm carbon fiber rods all the time now. Still have my LWS 15mm for when I want it, but I prefer 19mm for the vast majority of my shooting needs.

Interestingly since I've purchased it, I haven't actually tried it out with still glass yet. I'll try that out tomorrow and see how it feels. The ratio is not optimized for still lenses though.

That's nice phil. I guess you couldn't ask much more from a follow focus. Well done. I was thinking the same thing in terms of rails. So you just mount your camera onto a riser and straight on to a 19mm baseplate? I need something quick to go from tripod to shoulder quickly. I think that will work pretty well.

Harry, I highly recommend using the TrekPak divider system for Pelican cases. They make insert kits for various size Pelicans if you already own cases or you can purchase the case+insert directly from them. I am currently using it in (3) Pelican 1510 cases and plan to equip all my Pelican's with it. You can customize the layout in minutes and change it as needed if your camera configuration changes. It gives your gear plenty of protection and is just an awesome solution. Check it out at http://www.trekpak.com

This is the site: http://www.fmstartingpoint.com It is exactly what it says, a starting point. I realized I had no idea where to start when creating a database so that was a great start.

The labels I got are .25" x 1". I was able to fit 3 letters sideways plus a 5 digit barcode. Hope this helps!

Thanks Dominick-
That sounds right up my alley. Would you mind linking to the FM template? I've been trying to build something from scratch in FMP, and while I actually sort of enjoy figuring out how to make a database, I think it would be a bit better use of my time to have a good starting point. Thanks so much!

-Harry

Oops sorry! I did miss that. Well the accessory attachment bracket solution has been working great. I see Phil has a similar solution.

You must have missed the part where I said that I hate Israeli arms with a passion, lol...

Trevor, Tom and Dominick-
Thank you all.
Trevor, looking forward to the pictures, although part of me really wants to have a cut foam case. I'm actually using a 1510 with dividers right now with my Scarlet, and I do like it, but I'm always keen to see how other folks are doing it.
Tom, glad to hear you're liking the TrekPaks. Been keeping an eye on them since they popped up on Kickstarter. Very interesting, might try it out for my battery case first or something.
Dominick, thanks. I'll look into the labels, and I'll try to let you know if I wind up creating a more equipment specific database.
Thanks all!
Best,

-Harry

Hey, now that is sweet! Looking into this right now. How are the dividers in terms if impact protection? They look a bit thin, but the customization looks great.

The dividers are very rigid with the honeycomb material in the middle, and then both sides are covered with a high-density foam that won't break down but still supplies some amount of cushioning. They are also coming out with a thicker "industrial" divider, but it is so much thicker that it eats up a lot of the available space in a case as small as a 1510.

Tom,
Would you use this divider system in checked luggage?
Yes, I would Peter...without any hesitation. The dividers hold the gear tightly in place without any movement. Although just to be on the safe side, I'd probably put the camera body and anything really fragile (lenses and monitors) in lens wraps for a little extra protection. http://www.filmtools.com/20libyli.html

our solution with quick release, no arms..

our solution with quick release, no arms..

one of our setup's : EVF mount from W00D camera, 19mm top mount + sliding top handle from RED, which i like a lot
http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-top-mount-rod-compatible, and the RED
i would not add a top plate anymore as on the picture, it just adds weight...
The EVF and Bomb are connected with a 16x9 quick release, the second one can live on the handheld kit or
on the top handle.
i must admit we still use an arm if we need to add a second display for the AC...

@Filip: just curious -> which base plate brand/model is this? I'ts a longer one (longer then the camera) so I'm curious...

thanks!

hmm, then there must be differnent lengths out there - the one we use is also W C but just as long as the camera base and not longer... I think I'll have to take a closer look into that (sometimes longer wouln't be too bad for various bigger tripod bases and to protect the plugs/cables on the back-side)...

Yes. Check their website. There's a XL version available.
