  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best laptop out there for CS5?

Well, I just spent some time with HP on live chat and they are UNABLE to tall me which SSD they will use... the thing is that when I check here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...der=BESTMATCH&Description=ssd+256gb&x=14&y=31

It doesn't seem I will be saving too much money installing a SSD by myself... on RAM I will save about $400.

Yes thats probably true, you might seem to only save <$100 by installing your own SSD, but you have to consider that for $700 HP might be selling you some outdated SSD that isnt even sold retail and goes for $100 on ebay because it has controller issues and/or cant keep up with the latest drives. This is a worst case scenario, but quite possible in my mind. They probably arent even trying to rip you off, they just started offering those drives last year and got them Bulk OEM and they even cost $600 at the time but little did they know better ones with a proper controller that doesnt stutter, trim support, and double the write speed would come out a month later. I'm not saying that is the case but I am saying you just dont know and its unlikely they look for new SSD tech coming out and offer it to you as soon as retail stores do. SSDs have a complicated history and tons of improvement even in the past 6months, so its worth knowing.

Get the i7 for Premiere Pro CS5 NOT the core duo quad core processor. It's about twice as fast for video. The i7 is very optimized for video, especially transcoding & whatnot.

Also, thanks for stopping the PC vs. Mac crap, oy, my head.

I know, I know... its a big problem. So what, I will buy it without it and then buy and install a SSD without knowing how to do it, and then I will have to reinstall windows on that drive..... crap. I'm not sure this is a good idea.

HP live chat - "we are not allowed to give out this information" (on "which brand and model will you use?")

Doesn't smell good to me. How hard is it to install a SSD alone? Is it accessible like the RAM? Anybody in the NY area that can help me with this?

It's not as hard as you think, I posted a link with text instructions. Not for the exact same model but concept is still the same. The nicer thing about these larger workstation laptops are that since they are bigger and heavier, it's easier to open up and take a look see.

I'd just follow the instructions carefully. As for reinstalling windows, also very easy. Since it's a "company made computer" it will come with a recovery disk, you literally just throw that in, boot from it and it will install everything as if it was factory settings.

If you don't see a recovery disk, you can make one in win 7, also tutorials you can google,

or you can use the built in backup utility in win 7 and have a direct image of the stock hd on a external drive. Pop in the win 7 disc, and there will be options for you to load your backup disc image. Several minutes, and you have a full functional laptop with a speedy SSD you can trust, with the same factory settings and drivers that were installed previously.

Then you can brag to your friends that you tricked out ur notebook yourself and laugh at them as your blazing along in your edits :)

Heh clearly the actual model of the SSD isnt a selling point for them :P

Shouldnt be too hard to install an SSD alone. It may vary in difficulty from one model to another, but in all likelyhood you will unscrew a couple screws, remove a panel to reveal the drive, remove a couple more screws holding the drive or a small drive caddy in place, put in your drive, replace the screws and panel and thats it. I am in NYC if you need assistance.

I recently installed an Intel X25-M in my portable workstation and did a fresh hackintosh/win7 install without much issue. I'd highly recommend a fresh install on any new computer anyway, especially if it comes with Windows (and inevitably a bunch of junk preinstalled you dont care about). When I ordered the drive in January, the X25-M was by far the fastest drive for random accesses, as Intel SSDs have been for quite a while, and supports TRIM. I dont know if this is still the case, but I definitely recommend Intel SSDs despite their limited sustained write speed, as superfast random access and reads are the most important thing for most kinds of boot drive usage. I think there might be better drives out now but I havent been keeping up on it since I'm not in the market for a new one anymore.

i want 50 of these. :)

my question is, since they are internal raid to gain that capacity and speed... can i raid these any further? if i popped 5 of these in a raid tower could i further expand the speed and capacity? multi stream 4k editing? easy. :)

Wow interesting, seems a little weird considering if you just bought two 256GB SSDs an RAIDed them yourself you could get almost twice the speed... Seems like theyd need to release something like this with SATA6G...
Not sure how I feel about drives that are internally raid0ed and support no raid management. Yes you could probably RAID it though if you wanted.

If I wanted capacity, a single 512GB SSD would be cheaper, and for speed two Sata6G 256GB (Crucial has a ridiculously fast one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148349) raided would be more than twice as fast as that OCZ, and cheaper. Note: I'm talking sequential read/write speeds here, itd be a different story if I were looking for fast random read/write performance. I dont think trim currently works with RAIDed SSDs either.

BTW have you seen this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227500
I must say, that is a lot of speed, and quite a bit of capacity.

Will red release a SSD module so we can record straight on one of these?

I believe they have said they will release a module to allow recording to a 1.8" SSD. Intel X18 SSD's are a good candidate for this. I dont believe they have mentioned whether or not we will be buying SSDs to add to a caddy they sell or whether they will be releasing it as a proprietary product with internal SSD already installed.

Either way, I am looking forward to downloading footage at 250MBps.

angry over yet again simple minor upgrades, when the "professionals" have been asking for a overhaul. IMHO, the mcp's from 2 years ago with the expresscard slot still in the 15 inch model was perfect. had everything you wanted at the time, and with growing demand, they are just trying to tease you with a few tweaks here and there so get you to spend another 3 grand.

i won't be getting a new one until the "pro" comes back to the macbook.

How do you guys feel about the new apple macbooks?

Gotta say, no USB3 no esata one pci-e expresscard lane only (none in most models!) makes for a very bus-limited computer, even the lowest end non-Apple laptops have esata and expresscard these days. And no quad core option? even in the 17in? No RGBLED? and still expensive??

Only thing that looks impressive is the battery life claims. But then about 1% of my total computer use involves a laptop that is not plugged into the wall.

Less on topic, it always amazes me how many crazy non-standard monitor ports macbooks have gone through.

What i feel about new macbook pro ? ligth with very good battery and alway well designed. But ?

As i told before, i bought clevo D901C 4 years ago and it is more powerfull than new macbook pro 17 ..... (CPU and GPU)

Intel Core i7 M 620 @ 2.67GHz 2892 for macbook pro 17
VS Intel Core2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 3343 for old clevo D901C
vs Intel Core i7 975 @ 3.33GHz 7008 new D900F...
As we can install desktop cpu into clevo there is no stress... and clevo have always the best gpu on the market inside. The only black point to me is the design.

highter results are better

voila.

Bye,

yep, I m rollin on 9262. Pretty much all I need for video editing. 3xSSDs in RAID0, Intel Q9650 12mb L2, 6,7Gb DDR2, 9800GTX SLI. Those new models with i7 980EX are rocking though. Ultra fast. Could embarrass most desktops out there.

This is interesting... even with three 160 gig intel SSD and maxed out its only 4.2k

Does PP 5 supports GTX 285M?

Are these reliable? The thing is, HP is international warranty, right? I'm international. By the way, the HP is 18% off....

I need to order one of these by tomorrow...

Why not the ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 anymore?

It seems hot (3D ready?), affordable etc.
