u said ur looking for the best laptop for cs5, this is running an ATI video card, 5870 is a monster card, but CS5 is optimized for nvidia. CUDA only exists in certain nvidia cards, and mercury pro will only work with those cards. other than that it's good setup.

Currently there's no laptop with a certified card.

"mobility"... I like the idea of start editing right there and then and I will be shooting in the states for 6 months and then get back to Europe. If I get a desktop it will be a major headache to take it back home, or sell it and buy another one.

So I still didn't understand the point of getting an Apple - if you guys are saying that anyway I need to get a RAID setup, what does it matter if its for a Apple or a Windows based?

You know, this laptop, I could probably use it for 1 year and then sell it to a gamer for almost the same price or lose maybe just 20%

i think ppl are recommending apple just for it's solid reliability both in the field and at home. but it's not a hardware thing anymore, apple USES pc components. every last bit of it is no longer 1st party apple made. that's y we can get hackintosh's and so on now. it's all about the OS, and i run mac and pc. windows 7 64 bit is rock solid and amazing, so when it comes to cs5, it won't really matter unless you want certain "apple only software" like if u wanna interchange between cs5 and FCP for any reason.

as for a nice CS5 setup for laptop, aim for a workstation based, or high end desktop replacement (some even marketed for gaming will give you a lot of raw power) for something that's gonna give u the juice u want. 64 bit operating system, max out the ram, make sure it's a nvidia compatible video card (HP as mentioned before has a dreamcolor screen workstation laptop with a mobile quadro card in it) that's where the power of cs5 lies in. RAM AND GPU. You can get by with internal SSDs depending on how big ur projects are, they are so fast, not even 10,000 rpm spinning disk hard drives can compete. but they are small in size and expensive which is why ppl are recommending raid drives but are you really intending to stick 50 picture in picture h264 streams together with 20 effects and multiple color corrections?

if it's for red footage, you will probably get by on a nice raid 0 esata drive, something caldigit, their mini-vr's are great for travel, cuda will help take most of the load for u, and i can't guarantee perfect performance, hell i might be wrong, u might get perfect performance. but that seems like the best bet for what ur looking for.

but are you really intending to stick 50 picture in picture h264 streams together with 20 effects and multiple color corrections?

No, its going to be for straight editing, nothing fancy.

Mike, will you be using PP or AE mostly... or both equally? As someone, (Tom.Wong, I think) pointed out on another thread, AE uses mostly CPU while PP uses primarily, GPU. Usage could effect what you need to buy.

I'll use PP...

just look for a laptop with cuda accelerated video card, compatible with cs5, an i7 quad core processor, at least 6-12 gb of tri channel ram, and a SSD with a decent external solution too and u'll have a lot of power.

So with a RAID5 I don't need the SSD, right?

Or should I get 1 SSD for the system and 2 500GB hdd? Or for RAID all three drivers need to be the same?

One more thing - a desktop solution is really not for me. I have been living in 4 different countries in the last 2 years, I travel all the time... I didn't have a desktop since 2003 I think.

WOW, that looks good, adobe says gtx 285 works with Ppro, maybe gtx 285m also works, i don't know. Make one ssd for the system, the other two must be the same, make them a RAID 0 for maximum speed, and get another external hdd for backup, in case one of the drives in the raid fails, and you have a powerful, yet cheap, mobile workstation.

OK, this is sick......
