  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best laptop out there for CS5?

EARLY MAY? What happened to October / November?

That's the problem, this laptop doesn't come with a expresscard or firewire. So what I'm asking, is this a deal breaker? I could just edit on the 1TB it comes with and use the USB2 for backups etc, right? Or is UBS2 very very slow?

I'm really trying to avoid buying a desktop....

USB2 is very, very, slow. You'd need to consider backups, etc (getting video data on and off the drive) to be overnight jobs. 200Gigs would take 4-5 hours to copy. That's if you're not doing verification.

But then even with wirefire it would take 2-3 hours, isn't it just 30-50% faster?

And what about my idea to use wifi N enabled external drive?? Are you trying to push me down??

First the Zeiss CP T2.1 and now this! What a day...

Mike honestly I think you need to do some research youself online, the amount of bandwidth needed is far in excess of what your proposing.

And not using the best product for your needs is in my opinion a bad decision and one that you'll find makes your job much harder. Theres a reason we all use Apple products when working with our clients. Don't ask for advice then ignore it, unless you have a valid reason not to use apple then my advice is still to get a Macbook pro with an external array.

Hi,

my choice is since severals years CLEVO NOTEBOOK. (D901C and now D900F).

it's transportable solution (5kg), you have the power of workstation, nvidia GTX285 AND i7 or xeon procs with 3 HDD...

screen is perfect.
my hard disk system is Torqx 256 GO SSD.
and have raid 1 mirror of 1TO.
12 go of Ram...

Apple is really nice notebook and run well. You don't need to update drivers or firmware etc ... but ?
but, it's expansive, close with old hardware.
I bought my first D901C 4 years ago (with quad core @2.8 and 8 Go or ram) and today macbook pro can't do better...

Jay, What is the "bandwidth needed" for backup and moving things around? I will have 1 TB to edit on.

I don't ignore your advice, but I am not getting straight answers either. Wifi N is 160 Mbps, so am I being difficult or are you trying to defend your own decision to use Apple?

You can backup to whatever you want , I would never backup to hard drives but if thats your choice. I am talking about where are you going to edit from.
You will not have 1tb to edit on, that internal drive is not fast enough to edit from. Unless you are doing on online on a full system, and only cutting offline proxies.

Seriously? a 7200 RPM hdd is not fast enough? So there is another discipline of knowledge that I need to master? Computer Hardware? This is harder than my Master's thesis. Where do I start......?

geeweeez

I still don't get it. The MBP comes with the same 7200 RPM drives and no RAID. So you are saying that in any case I need external RAID drivers? Or are you telling me to order the SSD? How many hours will I have on 256 gig after the system etc? 10?

And I can buy a windows based laptop with SSD just the same...

Sorry yes I am saying that to edit HD you will need an external raid of some sort.
I would get an SSD for the system drive but again not to edit off. YOu want to be editing off a RAID5 array with a good amount of bandwidth.

Jay - thank you. Just one question. Why wouldn't you edit from the SSD? For safety? The one I'm looking at is 355/MB for read and 250/MB for write. Will I have dropped frames or... ?

Capacity and safety and price, I'm stuck in my ways and I think SSD's while a great fast acquisition format are still to pricey to RAID5, thus leaving you with raid 0 for speed which I just don't go that way, too risky for me. The price of high speed raid arrays has dropped so much that its a fantastic place to be in at the moment, your getting for 2,000 what I have literally spent 20,000 on a few years ago. I have the invoices to remind me :P

I think one of the reasons people are advocating for a Macbook Pro (I switched 2 years back after 'hating Apple Computers too' and now I never want to use Windows again, but I'm going off topic) is that it's well built, AND you can run BOTH OSX and Windows, giving you much more flexibility.

And RED has some OSX-only solutions, and from what I've red, many of their software-solutions get faster updated on OSX then on Windows.

And honest question: have you used OSX for a considerably amount of time?
When I used Windows, and I got my hands on Mac, I didn't like it. Everything was 'different and weird and I didn't like it'.
A couple of years later I did the same, but with a different attitude - at that point I WANTED to learn more about the Mac.
I mastered the system very quickly, and I find myself now much more productive on OSX then I've ever been on Windows.

And don't go by specs alone. Because OSX is generally a better written and robust OS, and because Apple makes both software and hardware, generally a Mac is (feels) faster than a PC with the same specs.
I'm not trying to 'convert' you. But I just notice that when I hated Apple, I hated their computers too. Looking back, I didn't have any reason too, and once I got rid of that, I just felt sorry I didn't switch much sooner.
Just trying to share my experience.

Good luck with finding the laptop, btw.

Mathieu, OSX being better and robust is an opinion. If you use win 7 64bit and CS5 you would probably say the same about win 7. Apple makes a good standard notebook, but if you want more, you need a pc. When i bought my dell precission m4400 apple didn't have anything even similar to what i got. Even now, more than a year later. If i had the money i would buy a lenovo, a dell precission or an hp elitebook, all of them more expensive than a macbook but with a quadro inside. If i had a few bucks i would get a gamer notebook and a few accesories. My two cents.

Hey Mathieu,

I worked on a Mac for three weeks, in a FCP workshop. That was my first and only experience. Everyone around me were using it for years but still I was helping them with all kinds of problems, because I'm using computers since I'm 7 years old and its all very intuitive to me.

It's not about that - I just don't want to be part of this crowed. I don't like that their system is closed, I don't like to pay more for less, I don't like how they hype features which exist in other products for years as if they are knew, and how they hold them back so they can come up with a "new" product every 6 months, dragging people by their nose, I don't like their smugness... I hate this cult behavior and I hate consumerism. Basically, they represent everything that I hate in our society. :emote_head_explode:

So... You are saying that editing off a SSD is a no go? :-)

If i had a few bucks i would get a gamer notebook and a few accesories. My two cents.
