  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best Follow Focus for under 1k?

I invested in a redrock a few years back and now there is so much movement in the gears is basically useless.

I'm looking for long term quality and build quality.

Same experience here with the Redrock FF bought with our R1. It's pretty much useless now, and it was too expensive to be that short lived. I don't trust them any more – a company like RED would have exchanged such a thing at no cost (if they would have ever made such a mistake).

But how can we know if any of these newcomers (like TrusMT or Lanparte) will be fine in 2 or 3 years?

If you want the real deal, go Arri and spend $$$$…

I have a O’connor CFF-1 as my main FF. It’s amazing and it’s like an erector set...totally configurable in any way.

You don't, which is why many people purchase them only to buy a better one down the road.

A lot of people who purchase 'Low end gear' need some sort of decently priced gear to start off of. Not all of us need an Arri FF4 or similar right off the bat, and if we did, then there wouldn't be a question of purchasing one that is inferior.

For what the 'cheaper' players are worth is something to get the job done. They aren't going to be rented or worked like ARRI or Oconnor stuff is. They do their job and will last if you take care of them. And they might be worth something for hocking up on classifieds when the time comes to step up to something bigger.

I've received a few PMs about this and thought I'd chime in. I tested out and have used a lot of follow focus units out there. This time around the best bang for my buck was the Redrock Micro Follow Focus¦blue. I've been using it for a while and have been pretty happy. They really redeemed themselves with this new design, and that's coming from somebody who loathed the V2. The next level up in quality is the OConnor O-Focus and it is a noticeable leap in quality and price.

After having low end follow focuses I'm jumping to the oconnor one. Tested it out at nab and the still gearing and optional cine knob is exactly what I need.

As Phil mentioned, the microFollowFocus | Blue is part of our new |blue line of higher end accessories, and it shows. The main features V2 owners like to hear is that 1. It has a solid and adjustable indicator arm (with hard adjustable hard-stops), and 2. It has the ability to adjust for the eventual wear and tear of torquing heavy weight lenses via it's user operated backlash adjust. Essentially it can be brought to like new performance at any point in time, aka zero play.

All of our cinema accessories now come with a lifetime warrantee as well.

That said we had them in our NAB booth on anything from an L Series to a CP.2, and at B&H they had it controlling the Canon 30-300mm Cine Zoom with ease.

Whats the status on the remote FF system?

I am using the Cinevate durus and am experiencing no problems. Solid build, great feel, good performance. Only mistake I made was purchasing larger tips for the lens gear. Just checked their website site and they are selling it for $750 now. Good thing I bought mine for $800 a few months ago. Check it out.
