  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best brand for ND filters: Tiffen, Formatt or Schneider?

I'd be interested in the group buy. I'm looking for a few 4x5.65 ND's (.6, .9, 1.5, and 2.1), and a 138mm circular pola.

Ok - I'll see what I can get from him assuming about 10 buyers. I do know Schneider only lists .3,.6,.9,1.2 - but I'll ask him if they can make stronger ND's custom. Is everyone looking for 4x5.65 in the ND's?

I put in my order for the Formatt HD ND 1.5. They said they have never made one before with the HD glass. It will take about 10 days to make. Price was 180.00 GBP. This is 40.00 GBP more then regular stock filters. Also getting a HD ND 1.2 and 138mm circular "drop in" polarizer.

Hi Shawn...
Ooops... too late with my reply. I was going to recommend Schneider because I think the NDs are the most neutral of the bunch. Sometimes I think Tiffen goes a bit green. Tiffen is a very good brand and they really do stand behind the product, though. I've had them replace filters that have had issues years after I purchased them with minimal questions asked. No experience with the Formatt brand, but I'm sure you'll do fine...
Nowadays, the color correction and control in post is so sophisticated that the minute differences between brands is likely insignificant.
Cheers,
Harry

Whatever happened to this group buy?

Good question. Actually, I can probably still arrange it if we can come up with a couple basic kits people would want.

I'm thinking I might go with .6,.9,1.8 after doing some tests with my light meter. Anybody else have any thoughts and what a good 3 or 4 filter ND kit would be for RED?

add 0.3 ND, so you have 1.2 and 2.1 if you wish....

i was really interesseted in this group buy....it was around 700 USD

I think the group buy thread got lost in the crashed server a few weeks ago. Let's resurrect it in a new post to get people interested in it again. I would definitely be down for it and I was pretty sure there was quite a bit of interest in it before.

Appropriate ND filters using (from the RED-HEAD) is an urgent NEED for the (future) RED ONE users!!!

Has a definitive list been compiled yet?

So far my list includes:

ND 0.6, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8
Circular Polariser (138mm round pola)
85A

I just got my red one camera, and i´m looking for help regarding places or stores where I can buy filters needed and hopefully TIFFEN. I live in Chile and I´m planning to asist to the red day or whatever and use the trip to look for prime lenses(1.4) used , filters, mattebox and focus puller. I,m gonig to be in L.A. so if anybody can help a third world camera owner, i will really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Juan

p.s: I have a budget for all the above of 15,000 dollars and I need to get at least two prime used lenses (1.4)

Abel Cine Tech in Burbank can help you out.
