  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Basic Raw Editing in Resolve

Thank you very much Rand and John for your detailed responses. I really appreciate the time you have taken to help me out and post screenshots to make things clear, especially considering the difficulties of dealing with this outdated website!

I will try your suggestions today and get back to you, but this looks like a pretty straightforward workflow.

Are you sure ?

Resolve is very good at being optimised for BRAW playback. I use a 2017 MacBook Pro and can play back, edit and grade 12K BRAW no problem. No proxies needed.

I think it is just because I am working off slow external drives. braw plays great off my internal SSD.

Okay. This is brilliant. Thank you both. I've set up the project as Rand suggested. Then I add the clips to a timeline and adjust the raw settings. I only want to make raw adjustments at this stage, so I'm not changing the curves, but John's suggestion of using Extended Video gets me nearly where I want to be. I can then save sidecars, or I can even copy the raw settings into the file by using media management to copy and trim it (If I don't trim, the settings don't seem to get copied).

Thanks again to you both.

John, if you are chatting to Blackmagic, please ask them to consider adding pre-record in a firmware update.

You're welcome Robert! John is the expert, I'm just glad I could help.

Would love that feature, I've been asking for a long time. It's unlikely to happen because of the way they do their firmware. The camera would have to be DESIGNED to do it, and so far they haven't don't that. If it appears it would be in a future camera that's designed to have that feature. It's the same answer for dual card / redundancy recording.

That's a shame. I did use the dual card recording a lot. Not the redundant type, but alternating frames so at least if a card fails you still have every second frame.

Yeah dual card totally works for making faster media, but if you think about it, you'd have to literally double the throughput inside the camera for dual card / redundant recording to work. It has to be designed to that from the very beginning.

Yeah that makes sense. I guess if you want redundancy, and if you are not overcranking, you can use the existing dual card recording to get a kind of faux-redundancy. For example, if you are shooting 24p 180deg shutter, just change it to 48p 360deg. Then you will have 2 copies of the same 24p clip (just offset by 1/48th of a second).
