  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bad news...

Inasmuch as we are all still a part of this company, engaged in the entire process of its growth, and disclosed to throughout its successes and setbacks, you needn't freak about an external event that put all of us back a few steps. Thank you for being an accountable leader, and not merely taking credit during the easy days. Take pride in having built such a devoted support team in a few quick years, and know that we're all feeling the pinch not at you but right along with you.

The impact is everywhere. I suspect that we are only beginning to see and feel the effects ripple worldwide.

From WSJ, "TOKYO—A representative from Apple Inc. recently called Kureha Corp.'s offices in the U.S. The problem: Apple was facing tight supplies of lithium-ion batteries used in its popular iPods, and they traced the supply bottleneck to the relatively obscure Japanese chemicals maker.

Quote of the week.

I just have to tell you Jim that you have been an inspiration to watch these past years. From the day you personally helped me order and place my deposit for my RED ONE at NAB and told me I could reduce my deposit by not adding the accessories to my cart (and then later someone told me who you were because I didn't know), I knew I had met someone extremely unique in this world. It's extremely rare for a person of substantial means to take on challenges that cannot be solved with money alone.

"The event that sends the Second Act hurdling into the Third Act should be the emergence of the Protagonist overcoming his lowest point. The Final Action is taken by the Protagonist. Now it's a race to the finish. The suspense, tension and drama are at the highest point here. How and why the Protagonist has acted tells us something about the character"

Mr. Jannard,

It's all going to work out fine. It's not worth putting your health in jeopardy over things you simply can't control.

The fact is, things in Japan will get back on track. It won't be too long. A lot of other businesses rely on bits and bobs from Japan as well.

Some folks may be disappointed but disappointment doesn't begin to describe the loss of one's home, business, sons, daughters, husband, wife.

The other day a junior high school went ahead with their graduation ceremony. A father sat with just a photo of his son. His wife had also been lost . He went up and accepted the diploma on behalf of his son.

He is only one of many who have had their lives turned upside down and their guts ripped out.

Time to count our blessings.

Shit happens... I doubt anyone is going anywhere. We will continue to wait because as RED's track record shows, it is worth it.

Maybe RED Team should take a vacation for a bit until things rebound. Completely deserve it. I'm sure there are plenty of REDUSERs who could "cover" the essentials for you guys... ;)

Have to strongly disagree Brian. One of the best therapies is getting people back to work and their minds off their troubles 24x7. If you had read the latest news reports, people are already banding together to get their businesses going again.

@Brian. @Joe, @Elsie

I hope I can put a little perspective on this being in Tokyo now myself. The Japanese spirit is strong right now. There is an amazing sensation of, yes, we have suffered a massive tragedy, but "Gambare!" meaning "let's do it together." Lets rebuild Japan.

Unfortunately our friends up in Northern Japan still often do not have appropriate shelter, food, medicine, gasoline, roads or even electricity as the quake and tsunami has damaged all of the above, making getting to many places difficult or impossible. In fact, even now as I speak in the greater Tokyo area there are shortages of bottled water, iodine, gasoline and electricity. I tried to rent a car from Toyota a few days back and they said they were closed to to the Tohoku Quake and the Gas shortages.

So, now that there is a clearer picture of the situation, you can probably understand that the Japanese people would love nothing more to get back to work and start making parts and getting the economy back on track be it for Apple, Red, Toyota, Daewoo... but unfortunately the situation needs to stabilize before work can begin again. The supply chain has been impacted.

You cant drive to your factory to make parts if your car has washed away, you have access to no gas, electricity, food or shelter.

Japan will bounce back very, very soon, mark my words. And progress has been seen already. It is just the scale of this all has been incomprehensible. The desire to get back on top of it all is very strong here at the moment.

So I hope this puts the final word to this topic to you three guys :)

Best of luck, and I look forward to sharing my Epic X images with all you guys whenever that is!

Well said Ivan,

My post 109 was meant to convey optimism for Japan. I hope you see it that way.

Very best wishes to your nation for a speedy recovery.

Of course Elsie!

I just wanted to shed some light regarding the actual situation on the ground here. I have seen a few threads regarding Japan descend into a shitfight so I wanted to head off any potential of that happening here, since in this thread we are all trying to encourage Jim during his tough times (and get our damned cameras at some point as well.. lol) :)
I know how easy it can be for a persons intention online to be misconstrued sometimes!

Cheers,

Ivan

Mr Jannard,

There is always a time where we will doubt that what we do is worth it or just feel down when something doesn't go our way. Although, when you look at your Epic and realize how amazing of a job you did you should feel accomplished not saddened. And if that is not enough for you, look at what your competition has done in the same amount of time and some of them much larger companies. And again if that is not enough for you to feel like you are one have succeeded look at all of us, glued to the computer screen communicating with each other about a product you created.... We are all willing to wait for the next version of the Red camera system, and we are all willing to do so because we resect you and your company because we know nobody else could have done it. So relax and stop spending so much money on blood pressure meds, all will be fine...

Jim,

I'm on reduser every day but don't post very often because I just enjoy reading what others have to say. But today I felt compelled to post after I saw this thread because I totally empathise with you. Working to a tight deadline and then being sideswiped by something completely out of my control was one of the worst feelings I have ever experienced. The only thing that helped me was having understanding people around me. When you look back, the people that give you a hard time just aren't worth the stress. This might not mean much to you coming from some small time guy over the other side of the world, but I beleive that you and your team have created a limitless cinematic landscape within the reach of anyone with an idea. That's powerful. That's immense. That's something I never imagined I would see in my lifetime. Thanks for going through hell and high water for us.

Absolutely agree. Take care Jim.

The man who made impossible, possible. We, RED Owners all with you !! Thanks for bringing a master piece on board ...

I didn't really realize the monumental achievement of what you guys were doing until I found the "blueprints" you guys posted for accessories makers, listing dimensions, and realized that Epic is BARELY bigger than my GH2.

You guys are crazy/amazing. It could have been 50% bigger and still had the best weight/performance or size/performance ratio of any camera ever.

There are people in northern Japan who are walking in radiation trying to stop the incredible madness... they are walking in radiation that will affect their lives forever. And we are worried about supply chain? It just doesn't seem right.

The balance in the world is much more delicate than we could ever imagine. A camera? A life?

Jim

This is so true Jim. You, us, we are all so blessed in numerous ways. Red is an amazing success. And so is Epic right NOW. I've read that there are 250 M's floating around, that's not just a handful.

You battled the "Bug" and won. Now it's something else that affects an entire country... even the world. It's relative impact on your camera is so small.

You have working Epics. Killing the bug was hard (b/c there was the chance that the camera design itself was flawed). Now you have to find a work around for these needed parts, but you know the camera functions very well.

So this really comes down to you feeling that you've let some people down b/c of a schedule that was posted. Don't stress about it Jim and all you guys at Red. We are just talking about a delivery date for a camera that we all know works.

You've always said "Everything is subject to change." We've now learned this means even the speed of the rotation of the earth.

There is a lot more to be thankful for than upset about.

Don't worry, can wait. Im pretty sure you guys can use this delay to perfect the EPIC feature so when it releases, it comes with 100% functionality.

No problem

Rivai

Jim,
I have not read all the posts, only the first couple pages. Most of us on this forum understand! Anyone who has ever tried to "create" something know there will always be pitfalls. (Which I assume includes everyone on this forum, because a camera is just that, a tool for creating.) I have not come across even the smallest production that has went 100% smooth. Granted I am frustratedm with this turn of events, very frustrate, but I know I am not as half as frustrated as you about this issue. So I am just saying keep your head down and keep pushing foward.

Thousands of people washed up on beaches dead. Buried alive. Whole families wiped out, cities wiped out. If anyone rates the delayed receipt of their EPIC-X as intolerable compared to that human tragedy, then good luck to you.

they Should also be fired as a customer. get their money back and be banned forever or at least 2 years from buying from RED.
Jim. Do not worry too much it is out of anyone's control. We need you in the best shape possible, we want to see those montros shooting 28k @30fps. so take care of yourself please. It is good to be humble but do not forget whom you are and remember that with great intelectual powers come great responsibilities.
