  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So I'm going to be doing some tests soon for an upcoming Black and White shoot.
I'm just throwing out this post to see if anyone has some suggestions for getting a nice silvery PLUS-X look?

Any B&W contrast filters people have used with success?

thanks!

I'd recommend shooting without any filter and do it all in post (you can still desaturate the in-camera look to get some BW effect while shooting)

This way you keep intact all your chroma information in the R3D and can use any channel mixer tool to perfectly adjust the BW look in post (less blue more green...) much more flexible to be able to adjust it later

It also work in RCX using the RGB channel gain and desaturate (the gain do happen before desaturation so it works)

Using color filters was a requisite when panchromatic film would record all 3 colors on a BW negative with no way to filter scene's color in post but with the RED since you are recording raw anyway it might be better to use no filter on camera

If you take the time you could create different BW looks in RCX and export them to camera with B30 so you can simulate those BW filter effects on set.

But the real advantage of doing it the old way would be to have more exposure latitude since you filter blue sky with a yellow filter thus could open the aperture a bit more than without filtration. More work on set, less flexibility in post but might be a better option to those who are used to shoot BW film stock...

Thanks for the link. I'm digging through the info now, and I'll be sure to post results once we do the test. (though that will have to wait until we get our cam back from getting the ol MX upgrade! Just got our email notification now!)
