  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Aww... the $4750 was pushing it already...

I might also remind you that beautiful work has been done on far lesser cameras and some meretricious junk has been shot on Red.

Amen Leo- that's something we lose sight of sometimes isn't it....:bath:

David, I think you have a good point on the lenses for the Panasonic 100, at least as far as the current Panasonic & Olympus offerings go, but the mount converters allow us to slap our PL lenses on and fire away. Even Nikon & Canon lens will be on the menu.

I plan to purchase the little 7-14 f4 to handle my wide angle needs and will use my Zeiss Standards and Cooke 18-100 for everything else.

I can't be too hard on 2/3" because I've made so many pretty shots with my VariCam, but shooting my Red reminded me of how much I love the DOF of shooting 35MM film; I do hope the 100 will be very close in that regard. I will never go back to 2/3"; no Scarlet in my future unless it's one with the big sensor.

I think I'll have a very capable arsenal; Epic and the AG-AF100 should cover the landscape very well, with a common set of lenses (mostly) and my 5D for tight places crash camera.

I think Epic will indeed be in my shop for a long, long time, while the Panasonic will most likely be replaced as better offerings become available, but at under 5K, who can complain? It's an expendable.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

The Scarlet is going to be a pro camera, seems like a prosumer price is not going to happen.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/red-founder-jim-jannard-calls-prosumer-scarlet-a-mistake/

The fixed Scarlet kit is only going up $1,000 to $5,750.

No large price increase other than what was stated. If we add boards and ASICs, it will cost more. The only reason we would do that is for EasyHDR™ and HDRx™. That would only be for Scarlet 2/3", 2/3" Fixed and Scarlet S35.

I shoot 2K only when I need the slow-motion, and I must say I really don't like it very much. I would never shoot 2k for any other purpose. My biggest disappointment with the Red One is the lack of over-cranking at 4K.

Of course Epic promises to blow that concern away.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

It will still be well under $10k for a useful basic shooting package, Red just can't build it in the $3k-5k range and meet their own high standards.

How do you know this David? There is no way to know what the selling price of the Scarlet will be once it gets here. Regardless of what the forum updates are telling you, there is no way to know until it gets here.

RED posts these estimated prices and people take them as gospel. This is leading to a lot of really frustrated people because, honestly, there is no way to accurately predict how much it will cost to build something this complex and with this much R&D.

Stuart English at RED has clearly posted that the Scarlet 8X Fixed BRAIN will be less than $6K USD in the latest threads (Subject to change sure). Then add accessories = Sub $10K.

Hey Tim do you have a link to the post you mentioned?

As far as I know the latest pricing was ...
Scarlet 8x Fixed- $4750 (includes Brain/lens, Side CF Module, REDmote, 2.8" Touchscreen LCD, REDVOLT battery and travel charger) + $1000 for HDRx™ = $5750

I'm just a lowly college student hoping to get a lick of the professional camera salt block. I knew I was going to have to save my hard earned cash a long time to get the $4750 needed for just the fixed Scarlet, but now I feel like I'm just some idiot chasing a dollar bill on a fishing line... right into a big cactus.... What happened to 3k for $3k?

You guys just need to slow down before there's nothing left to distinguish the scarlet from the epic. (okay okay I exaggerate, but I'm still sad!)

Trevor, you will have plenty of time to save up for your Scarlet. Not only that, but the rental rates on Scarlet will be very affordable.

I'm an evil working red one MX owner, shoot on a lot of other cams, etc etc - I get the scarlet cost question a LOT from athletes we film - the point is this, which I'm sure you all know but -

Its gonna cost more than 6 grand. You need extra batteries, a bigger or an extant fluid head, probably a better viewfinder...some storage...

AF-100 and Scarlet

AF-100 and Scarlet

The first delivery of AG-AF100s to the US will be 10,000 units.

Perhaps. Only time will tell.

The US product manager said today that there are only 3 units in the world, and the one she has is scheduled to go back to Japan.

Oh I'll definitely be buying a scarlet... just won't be for a long time now... lol who knows, maybe I'll have enough before this darned thing is actually released!

I've thought about getting a 7D or a 5D, but the rolling shutter on those cameras is atrocious, and I shoot for VFX. You can't match-move with that much rolling shutter (well okay maybe you can, but it requires a lot of preparation), plus I just find it looks really ugly (the rolling shutter that is).

Not to mention, that damn thing can't shoot above 30fps and it only shoots HD (lol yea ONLY HD... the promise of 3k has spoiled me! )

I am fully aware that buying a RED camera does NOT magically transform you into a pro, but dammit what kind of a pro shoots with a $300 camcorder???

Sure, but for a kitted out product that's true for every camera. Scarlet accepts standard 12V D.C.power, so you have battery options there, and it provides a full resolution 1080p or 720p HDMI monitor output, so you have access to inexpensive monitoring choices too.

The great thing is you can grow this professional camera system over time and know your investment is protected from obsolescence...

I didn't read every page here, but just wanted to put this out. I know people think camera = ability to make movies. And I'm not going to do the arrogant rant about story and such - but speaking totally logistically. Unless you're shooting documentaries or super super indie movies - it takes way more than the camera.

Students often are shocked once they leave the zone where everyone is working for free and the school provides equipment how much EVERYTHING adds up. Even catering. Parking! LOCATIONS... I have told more than one group that I'd pay for everything and cover the costs of the movie if they could secure and pay for the locations. There is just a ton of stuff to pay off - and cameras you can always rent. And unless you're shooting all the time, it is really hard to pay off the whole package.

That said, $3k for 3k I will concede is WAY more attractive than $6k for 3k. So much so, I'd just rent an epic for my shoot and stick to a $1k camera for goofing around probably.

My point though is just how little the camera's cost in rental will be of an overall budget. The glorious thing is that NONE OF US are paying for FILM and FILM PROCESSING.

Boy - you might feel gipped by some price changes, but rewind back to the day when just to make a short 16mm film you were paying tens of thousands in film costs... how many hours it took to work that off! :) Now i sound old :(

I was thinking along the lines of marks comments...

Think of a medium level Super 8 camera in the 70's, less than $1000. Todays dollars, almost $4000.

Plus, as Mark said, film, processing, on and on.

And that was Super 8......

(Now I aged myself:) )

Exactly. I really wish people would stop posting this kind of stuff. I don’t mean to sound rude - I get where they’re coming from, but (pardon the analogy) it would be like MacDonald’s telling you that a Big Mac costs $4 and you saying that it actually costs $6 because you need fries and a drink. Heck in my case I like chicken nuggets too so it’s going to be even more than that. But the Big Mac is still $4.
