Sorry if this has already been mentioned. I didn't see any other threads announcing it.

Today Avid released a new version of MetaFuze and Avid DS. Hand in hand, these two apps greatly simplify the offline/online workflow.
With MetaFuze, you scan your Red footage, transcode to DNX media and an ALE file. Open a project in Composer, import the ALE file and relink. Once you've locked your cut, select the sequence and "Send to Avid DS". This creates an AFE file that opens in DS. Then you simply choose to conform by linking to the .r3d files or capturing and creating new media. Your multi layered, fluid motioned, titled sequence will be recreated from the .r3D files. You could also choose to use the DNX media that MetaFuze created, if you created a high enough quality for online.

MetaFuze is a free download and will run under Windows, VMWare Fusion/Bootcamp and Linux. DS 10.1.1 is a free point upgrade. You can find all these over at Avid.com

We are going to give a demo of this workflow at the Motion Pictures Editors Guild (Los Angeles) towards the end of this month (March). If any of you are guild members, watch for the email blast from the Guild.

Also, I'll try to get a workflow tutorial up on Avid's site tomorrow, unless someone else beats me to it.

Finally, this is the news I have been waiting for. How do I get on the list to see a demonstration?

I don't know if anybody would know this, but I'm planning on buying a new computer soon. I was looking at either the older 3.0 GHz Mac Pro 8 core or the new 2.26 GHz Mac Pro 8 core. Does anybody know what would be the fastest computer for running Metafuze which I am guessing is avid's version of RED Rushes.

Avid is doing a workflow demo at RED User Group Los Angeles on the 28th. I usually post an announcement about the RED User Group meetings in the user group section but had no time to do it yet. You can RSVP for the meeting at www.redusergroupla.com.

There will be more things at the meeting than are listed on the site at this moment.

Here is also a brief summary of the new Avid RED workflow.

big news there.....where does the initial transcoding take place? within metafuze? what color control do you have over this 'dailies' processing into native MXF-wrapped formats?
The transcoding happens within MetaFuze. As for color control, you have ISO, Chroma, Black Level and you can load an RSX file. I'm trying to figure out how to link a screenshot for you. Let me poke through the faqs and see if I can figure it out.

If you're a Guild member, you can RSVP, once it's announced. If not, Igor has one coming up at the end of the month.

Of course, if you have a project coming up, you can always contact me offlist. You can find me at mforrest@postboxpost.com

I like the way they rub it in, smooth Multi-layered timeline. I hope Apple has an announcement soon.

With MetaFuze, you scan your Red footage, transcode to DNX media and an ALE file.

Am I right, if it's transcoding, then by definition it's not a native workflow?
As I understand it, native would be using the R3D files directly in the time line.

Native access and editorial finsihing is with Avid DS. Media Composer works with the DNxHD proxies of the files. This can be done directly via MetaFuze to MXF Wraped DNxHD and not have QUickTime as an interim step.

While the transcoding to Media Composer (MXF) is not native. The conform to Avid DS is. DS will link right to the R3D files, or you can capture to Avid's native format (transcoding) but always get back to the R3D source to make changes.

What does DS handle? Full debayer from a 4k R3D to 16bit RGB?
What are the (redcine type of) settings available in the CC tool?
Wich DS version?

Thanks

Patrick

Here is a screenshot of the Red import window. Once the basics have been set, you have full trackable powerwindows, Secondaries, Denoise filters etc. to prettify your pictures within DS. I have this set to 16bit RGB, but you can also work in 10bit or 32float. This is version 10.1.1 of DS

Niiiiiiice!!!!

Did you do any comparative test between DS and REDCINE / Scratch debayer?
Does DS convert the files in the background to DPX to work with or does it do debayer "on the fly"?

Long live DS!

Patrick

Long live DS!

Between DS and Redcine - no difference. I'll ask my neighbors at Local Hero to run it through Scratch. Would Scratch have a better debayer quality than RedCine? DS debayers on the fly.
