  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Avid's $999 crossgrade program for Final Cut Pro extended through September.

I think if Avid were to wake up and offer support for Decklink and Kona cards, they would grab a LOT of disgruntled FCP users. I think the crossgrade offer is attractive BUT I don't want to get boxed into buying Avid hardware.

I think it would also be prudent for Avid to start talking up MC6 and the move to 64 bit and how they plan to handle 4K+ footage.

I see Matrox has so low cost IO options for Avid - anyone use these?

Scott

I've used the Matrox MXO2 Mini with MC on my 17" MBP. Works fine. Monitoring-only (although you could capture with Matrox software, then import/AMA into Avid). The AJA Io Express also works with MC now, and has (HD)SDI) I/O.

Being a public company we can only say so much about futures to comply with federal regulations. But you do have a pretty good idea of where we're going and the fact that our entire business is built around postproduction; be it for film, television, broadcast, etc.

Perhaps one of the best investments I have ever made was the AJA Kona 3. This piece of hardware is still going strong and I've owned it for 4 years. It works with FCP 7/Apple Color, CS5.5(AJA has tweaked it even more now), FCP X (though not the way I want it to), and perhaps Avid MC at some point in the future (speculating here, have zero inside info on this. Just going on hints in these forums). Talk about powerful hardware. Now if only Resolve 8 would support it, I would have the mecca of NLE/grading possibilities with that AJA card. That would be cool.

Michael, as always, thanks for contributing here on the forums.

I just want to say that the Avid Community forums are very very helpful. Any of you guys switching over are bound to have ?'s.

I have to say that MC is very powerful and stable. But installation can be a little more involved for some setups. For example, in Windows you have to turn off Simple File Sharing and possibly change the installation User Account's drive permissioning. So in addition to Michael here, the guys and girls of the Avid Community will gladly be of help.

BTW, there are aspects of the UI that feel rather dated and the nomenclature can sound rather technical. It's a program with a very long history, so what might look foreign to a newcomer looks completely normal to someone who's been using the prog for years. That said, MC is very solid, very powerful and Avid has been great communicating and listening to its customers. I think you'll be very happy with the software. I know I've been.

How long is the offer good for? Tempting :)

Avid's products are so rich in professional features. If you have offline/online, complex audio, facility integration, etc. then you can't go wrong with Avid.

If you mostly finish your own projects, and are a smaller operation, then Premiere pro CS5.5 would do the job well, and might cost a bit less with a pro level output board (like Decklink)

...Avid are a little more conservative than Adobe... but that's because there are a heck of a lot of very demanding editors who will scream at them if they don't have perfectly fluid R3D editing...
Not to start a negative spin on this but we've been an Avid house for over a decade now and last years slew of errors did not sit well with us. I guess we didnt fall in with the "demanding editors" part when we were begging for a solution. Now the errors has passed but still pops up here and there (specific projects) so we've grown to just not rely on support and enjoy the false hope that someday it will be finally fixed. Its still a great NLE, just hope they dont slip back into old habits again (remember the Meridien mess :P).

Yay, join us!

Heck, I can open projects from OS 9 / Windows XP versions of Media Composer and Xpress Pro!

They actually go to the other extreme:

You can even trim the edit in current Media Composer... save... and the old versions of Media Composer could still read the file!

Yeah, I just used MC 2.8 to color a quick project that was cut and consolidated from MC 5.0 and FTP'ed to me. After I was done, I emailed the project file back to the MC 5.0 guy and Bam! it totally worked!
