Avid have announced that DS v10.5 will ship in October, including a $10,000 software only version.

Is it me or has BMD started something with Resolve? I mean, $10k ain't $995 but it's a hell of a lot better than the old days. Add to that the Autodesk announcements today and things are getting interesting.

Great news! What was the autodesk announcements today?

Shane, Avid DS is an NLE with finishing capabilities while Resolve on Mac is a grading application. IMHO, Avid responds with this announcement to Autodesk's Smoke on Mac which is the DS closest competitor and also aggressively priced.

Flame Premium gives new and existing customers access to Flame, Smoke Advanced and Lustre -- running on a single workstation and at a special price and other cross-grade incentives. Pricing is still $$$,$$$ for the full monty and $$,$$$ for the cross-grade promotions.

It also comes bundled with MC5. Software DS was available well before Smac, then they dropped it. So it's a relaunch and yes it could be considered a response to the great amount of notice Smac received.

in addition, this is a full blown DS not a reduced toolset like Smac. Just add CPU, cards and storage and you have your DS, or you can still buy the turnkey system from Avid. Either way, a software DS bundled with MC5 is a great bargain.

And $10K is a very cheap price point for what you get. Wow.

The new Autodesk deal applies to updates as well as getting Flame, Smoke and Lustre for $129,000.

WAIT, all those for $129,000? how does that work? where has that been published?

I understand that Hans. Just making the point that post tools beyond NLE's are starting to be affected by the kind of business model pioneered, to some extent, by the likes of Apple, Grant Petty et al. Smoke Mac is a Lite version but Resolve, although not in competition with DS, is an example of a full featured app available as SW only for a great price.

Of course, had Apple done the right thing with Color and Shake, this could all have happened years ago.
