Hey everyone so I shoot wildlife on my scarlet. My normal workflow is usually, shoot with no audio, cut picture and add in stock sounds and bg's later. This usually sounds way better than recording in the field for me but sometimes, I'd like to have on set audio to reference specific sounds animals might make. Sometimes, you can't get sounds the animals actually made out there though. I have a boom mic that actually does a very good job and I use it for reality shooting all the time. I wanted to see if it's possible to attach the xlr end of the mic to a stereo adapter so i can connect it to the mic inputs on the scarlet. Before I buy the cable, would this work or would I absolutely have to buy the x A-Box. I'd like to stay away from spending $200+ on something that will just let me reference...

Also, Sometimes, it would be nice to see my vista images in high contrast out in the field. What would be the best way to review the image in the field before I shoot? I'm afraid that if I save a look with high contrast to the camera, most other images will be blown out or too dark.

When I'm not using a field recorder/mixer, I use a couple of these:

Which I also rig with some cable clamps that I have mounted on a bar, just in case something or somebody tugs on it.

Remember everything you do with REDCODE is metadata, so even if you screw the look up in the field, download the footage and "make it right later". But to answer that question, a laptop.

we had a couple of the adapter cables fabbed up by our local cinema shop before RED offered them in their store. got a 2' 2ch hosed cable for about $35. works great. we always run through a SoundDevices MixPreD anyway, sounds waaaay cleaner than the internal mic pres on the EPIC. Oh, and always eyeball the mini jack when plugging in the cable. Don't do it blind, you'll miss and shove the plug into the fan. Almost shat my pants at the noise.

I agree with phil, a laptop with a good quality screen would be enough to preview your images. or, if you are looking for an actual monitor to plug into the cam, we have a couple of the Marshall 7" monitors, tweaked a bit, they look good enough to know what you are getting, and they do a 1:1 pixel with the 1080 SDI out. Bonus is we got the VMOUNT battery plates for them, and with an IDX vmount batt they will run for a couple hours, no problem. Also, you can set a LOOK up in RCX before hand and load it into the camera, and switch over to it to view live, see what the image looks like then switch back to RAW or a default LUT to shoot with.

Hey guys just wanted to say thanks! I went to the RED walk in store in Hollywood and got the xlr adapter. Works perfectly! For anyone who decides they want to go with another 3rd party cable, i'd suggest not wasting time. I went to Sammy's and got an adapter. It didn't work. I'd rather buy a stronger more durable cabe from RED anyways. It's always much better quality and its the same price... well 7 bucks more ;)

Red's adapter cable is wired differently than the standard for stereo minijack to XLR which is why Sammy's didn't work.
