  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

We all need an "attitude adjustment" every once in awhile. Right?

Jim

Thats Right!

last week i was bummed i could not get the funding for a BT scarlet , Now after a "attitude adjustment" a epic is looking Nice!

As a proud owner of 2 Epics and a Scarlet, I have one of 2 ways of looking at this news:

1- I can choose to look back, obsess and calculate exactly how much money was "lost", obsess about how much more I will "lose" as a result of a price reduction, let it immobilize and consume me with bitterness and blame RED for my woes.

OR

2- I can choose to look ahead to the future and obsess and revel in the thought of expanding my stable of cameras even faster now, secure in the fact that they will not need replacing and can be upgrade-able to Dragon, while fully appreciating and thanking RED for passing their savings down to the customer, allowing me to further obsess about the great films I'm going to make.

Filmmakers are very passionate obsessive folks and where we choose to place our "obsessions" will manifest in reality. Choose your obsession wisely, don't let it choose you.

Thank you RED for being who you are and not wavering in spite of difficulty or criticism, as artists and filmmakers we share a common bond, the adversity of going against the grain, that is defined as change.

This is amazing news. Revolutionary to be exact, although that is the RED brand coming to fruition. I am just feeling uneasy about the language the RED team are using when they say that they "are unusure of what the path might be". I don't know if I am reading things the wrong but does that not mean that you guys are neither willing to confirm nor deny that an upgrade will happen? I thought the question was how? not if...
it's already been established that they found out that the scarlet could not handle the ASIC chips needed to run the dragon and as such they're now uncertain whether Scarlet will ever be able to handle the Dragon sensor, however they have stated they will try their darndest to have SOME way for Scarlet owners to get the dragon (probably at the least with a trade in value towards a Dragon or something)

How large is this "finite" stock of Red One MX's ? Do i need to scramble order in the next day or two, or will they still have stock over the next couple weeks?

Peter... I am not really so smart. We try really hard to put ourselves in the position of our customer and weigh that along with our situation and the state of the market.

We make the best call we can given everything we know.

Some will be happy. Some will not. But it isn't for the lack of us trying.

I love this industry and have a special affinity to the young and up coming shooters. We try so hard to make everything work. But there is no magic wand except making the best camera we can and selling it for the best price we can given our costs.

This is easy stuff to understand but difficult to execute.

Jim

Wow, we can't ask for anymore than that. Thank you!

Just as long as I have an option, whether it means an upgrade or some kind of trade-in, I am sorted. I just don't have enough cash at this point to be upwardly mobile with RED if there aren't any of these previously promised options available, and I bought to the system on the premise of moving into an EPIC with the upgrade. I am not assuming at all that went RED wont come through on their promise, just vocalising a bit of maternal anxiety :)

More storytellers does not mean more budgets or more viewers. Both of those are mostly finite.

Rob, I do not disagree with you for one second. But you see, some of us have been building crews for quite some time -- honing our skills, and wanting the chance to well...have a chance. Not everything revolves around money. Yes, it is very important, but it does not dictate everything in life. And like my grandmother used to say, "The cream rises." Maybe the audience will be there for some of us.

In any case, we now have the resolution to play in the same arena as the big boys. And we can. And we will. Budgets are not everything. If you doubt that statement, you should brush up on your film history. This is now truly any man's game.

Unfortunately, this has been an arena largely controlled by gatekeepers. Kinda hard to do that now though, when everyone will have the equivalent of a 35mm motion picture camera, and access to new age in distribution very soon. Guess, Hollywood will simply need to throw more money at the screen to ensure it remains in a place all its own. Either way, in my eyes, everyone wins.

You sound awfully nervous, dude. What's up with that? :)

You should be happy. Relax.

wow, just wow. i need an Epic, now. An upgrade path from Scarlet would be awesome.

Wow JIM THANKS .. for the Great Price ON RED MX for Me its One of the Best Camera In the World .. ITS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE

I dont think it's been answered yet so my apologies if it has

I love my Scarlet but due to the awesome new EPIC prices, my question is.

For us Scarlet owners..

1. Is there a possible trade in for Scarlet to EPIC, either body to body or with side SSD, Canon mount etc

Obviously added fees on top, but would just like to know the possibilities ;)

They are working on it and don't know yet.

I love to sit here and watch you change our world. Much time has passed and you persevere.

A tip of the hat to all of you.

Proud to be a fanboy (yes, I admit), a user and a friend of RED.

Jim,

The first short film I ever shot as a DP was on an original RED one. I learned to love cinematography shooting on your cameras. My reel is 90 percent Red footage. I bought a BT Scarlet and you essentially gave me a 4k machine that I already loved for only 7grand!

Thanks for making me love cinematography, for caring about your customers, and for pushing the industry standard forward when no other camera companies want to budge! I've come a long way in my career and can't wait to keep shooting with your cameras!

You guys are truly the greatest not because of the camera but because you care about your customers! It's also pretty cool that your cameras look like guns :-p

I have a nice Rocky Patel 1990 waiting for you when I come to pick up my BT scarlet! Great job to the bomb squad, to Jim and too Jared.

cheers,
Graham Robbins
