  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

Sorry, can't seem to find this and don't have time to search a gazillion posts.

Is the dragon upgrade free for those who purchased EPIC X cameras at full price (before this price cut).

If not, what is the price?

Thanks,

M

6k USD

ya.

It seems like just yesterday that my jaw dropped when I saw what footage looked like from a DVX100. Today you have access to the imaging that the big studios are using for somewhere in the 20 G's. Crazy.

What was the Epic X price prior to the reduction to $19K?

I wonder what it does to rental prices. I think, not so much. Since an Epic M collection with screen batteries etc still cost 40300USD.... Do not remember how much it was before but I think 58k, or? So that is a 30% annual decrease in price. Seams logic, looking at how fast the rest of digital world spins.

OK... I'm a bit frustrated by some of your reactions. While I'm sympathetic to your situation... consider this. While some of you paid more for your EPIC than the new price announced tonight, you can upgrade your camera to Dragon for $6K. Add up your costs and compare to any other camera system.

No other camera company has ever offered a 100% trade in value to the next gen camera. Actually that has never happened in the history of any product that I know of. And no other camera company has extended the life of a camera like we have.

Think about the big picture here and put yourselves in our shoes. We have put ourselves in your shoes for over 6 years.

Jim

For every one guy who complains due to his self-centered interests, there are 25 guys whose dreams just got a little closer to coming true.

Full steam ahead, Jim. Eyes on the prize. Not that anyone ever needs to tell you that!

Upgrade

Upgrade

So i bought my Epic 40 day ago, spending 60000 dollar to get the dragon sensor for free,
is the deal for me still going?

Dear Jim,

I thinks its been a long night for you guys.

I had my 4h sleep in the meantime. And I still like what I see. Disruptive, yes, but welcomed. Saying that without actually intending any new RED camera right now, but expecting my customers (we are a post house) to use more and more RED cameras in the very near future...

I hope you get some sleep and see things positively next morning.

Do I see that right: RED ONE M-X with CF module already sold out? Amazing... (or has it been stopped, in favor of selling off SSDs instead of CF cards?)

However, considering I was stage 2 user, kept my RED ONE (upgraded it to M-X to be a valid B-cam to EPIC), I just had one thought this morning:

Will Dragon be just an upgrade program or will there be also a brain replacement program in place?
Like keep your old EPIC body and get a new Dragon equipped one at a certain charge?

I just can forsee that you make a firesale of returned M-X sensor based EPIC brains some day.
Throwing away those valueable sensor/ASIC combinations hurts already now...

However, you will surely come up with some nice approach when the time is right.

Thanks for a fun evening and a lot more,

Cheers,
Axel

Jim...

Why listen to, or focus, on negativity. There are plenty of us gushing over your decision. Focus on that. Seriously, sir. You just made a lot of indie filmmakers extremely happy.

One finger salute to anyone giving Jim a hard time. Seriously.

Jim or Jarred,

I own a Scarlet purchased Nov 3rd of last year and it's everything I hoped it would be. Its elevated everything I produce, but can you offer any advice in terms of upgrade path? It's been said multiple times that you guys will ensure a route to Dragon for Scarlet owners, whatever it may be, but with these new prices I'm trying to remain prescient and map out my next move a bit. Either plan for Epic X, or hold onto Scarlet and await Dragon news. Thoughts greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,
Drew

We continue to look at Scarlet and what the possible upgrade paths might be. We just don't have a complete answer today.

Four years ago, almost to the day I decided to start Downtown Independent as an outlet for independent cinema and motion picture based art. A few months earlier than that I had put my money down on a RED One almost as pre-commitment to the plan I had in mind. It was obvious the direction things were taking, (hey, I've been building my own PCs since '93, I remember when 8MB of RAM was like $800) and that soon almost anyone with the vision and the guts could make motion pictures, Motion pictures destined for the Big Screen. We're here now. Thanks Jim and Jarred and crew for making my business model make way more sense today. Keep kicking ass and the Downtown Independent will keep providing a place for indie cinema.
...please send the bomb squad some more RED Bull and Z Pizza, hopefully it's going to be a busy couple of weeks.

edit: it would be nice if the projector market caught up to the camera market soon :-)

James, where are you located? Can you PM me your information? What you are doing sounds awesome. I would love to assist/add to your effort in any way that I could. :)

I own a domain that I am building out: www.indieHollywood.com

Just stating my preference, that I would love to trade in my MX Scarlet for an EPIC with Dragon. I really hope that will be one of the options!

A camera brain I bought only six months ago can now be bought for $11,000 less than what I paid. I suppose one could say that's the price of doing business with RED. Unfortunately for a hobbyist like myself that price is too high.

Peter... I am not really so smart. We try really hard to put ourselves in the position of our customer and weigh that along with our situation and the state of the market.

We make the best call we can given everything we know.

Some will be happy. Some will not. But it isn't for the lack of us trying.

I love this industry and have a special affinity to the young and up coming shooters. We try so hard to make everything work. But there is no magic wand except making the best camera we can and selling it for the best price we can given our costs.

This is easy stuff to understand but difficult to execute.

Jim

Jim Jannard,

You are a smart man...

Way back when...in the earlier days...I totally questioned Jim and Jarred's motives. I basically wrote somewhere in a post here, "This is too good to be true. There has to be something wrong with this." Man. Wow. You have made a believer out me a million times over. Wow.

You guys, and this awesome community, are killing me. I love it. Most fun ever.

Jim, please make an upgrade path from Scarlet to Epic.
That is what I was hoping for on this announcement tonight and it didn't happened.
I got my Scarlet in June and paid full price for it. Actually paid the november 3 price. Aside the 10k I had to pay to bring it to Brazil.
I would buy an Epic instead for the new price.
If you give us Scarlet users a similar path as you did from the R1 that would be awesome.
Please think about it.
It was a 24k diference.
Now is only 8k for what I paid.
I love my Scalet but for this prices would be an Epic for sure.
Thank you.
