  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

This has suddenly changed the market, and benefitted the new customer. Not the existing customer.

I don't think anyone can argue this point. There may be a longtime benefit to the existing customer, but I'm hoping RED will now turn their attention to existing (and the soon-to-be existing) users and bring the benefits of cost reduction to them as well, in areas beyond the basic camera purchase, and areas we care about such as the equalizers with Alexa. Hopefully that can happen.

edit: although, now that the extent of the cut in price is given, its like the new customers essentially get the Meizler module for free compared to those who purchased the camera just a couple of months ago. Oh well.

Thanks for looking back and giving us little guys a go, thats how you get and keep loyalty.

OK... I'm a bit frustrated by some of your reactions. While I'm sympathetic to your situation... consider this. While some of you paid more for your EPIC than the new price announced tonight, you can upgrade your camera to Dragon for $6K. Add up your costs and compare to any other camera system.

No other camera company has ever offered a 100% trade in value to the next gen camera. Actually that has never happened in the history of any product that I know of. And no other camera company has extended the life of a camera like we have.

Think about the big picture here and put yourselves in our shoes. We have put ourselves in your shoes for over 6 years.

... the M to MX upgrade never changed price.

The R1 brain/body never changed price either (until today), but Epic sure did. I think being a more cautious buyer is to be expected after today's events. Early adopting R1 owners got 4+ years of being ahead of the curve with no price drop... It's understandable if early adopting Epic owners might be a little more gunshy moving forward.

Once bitten, twice shy.

You don't have to be frustrated. We need to adjust to this reality. Can't happen instantaneously.

All this isn't to take away from the big picture of what RED is doing. And that just rocks our world! RED needs to thrive and grow and go into territories where it hasn't yet, and this may do the trick.

Now, its time for us to go along with that ride in as aggressive a manner as RED has. You've shifted into a higher gear. So must we.

The sting is in the short term, but its still a sting. Am sure you can understand that. I just need to figure out how to get the Meizler module and some good glass into my arsenal, or wait until you have the new proxy module ready, or... so many options to consider. Decisions to make.

So what's the X-mas gift price for the Scarlet Upgrade to Epic Jarred? Heh heh heh

Dude.. Why are you explaining yourself...

You can do all you can do... and you have.

Feel good in your belly

Go to bed !

+1 to what Toia said. Rock on, Jim! Can't please everyone...

Love the new pricing. Seriously thinking about adding EPIC-Monochrome to my arsenal now.

do not have the time to read all of the 44 pages of posts, but do have time to say that this is the dream of anyone that produces anything, whether it is lemonade at a stand in front of your house or a 100,000,000. movie, higher quality, lower cost, quicker turn, (good, fast and cheap....not pick two, pick three!).

jim has just proven it can be "made in america" once again. if someone has already said this i apologize for being redundant. bring on the masses.

RED is 100% more than fair. I have found some of it almost impossible to believe. People get used to it and take it for granted.

Some of these reactions are pretty unwarranted and astounding.

Four years ago, almost to the day I decided to start Downtown Independent as an outlet for independent cinema and motion picture based art. A few months earlier than that I had put my money down on a RED One almost as pre-commitment to the plan I had in mind. It was obvious the direction things were taking, (hey, I've been building my own PCs since '93, I remember when 8MB of RAM was like $800) and that soon almost anyone with the vision and the guts could make motion pictures, Motion pictures destined for the Big Screen. We're here now. Thanks Jim and Jarred and crew for making my business model make way more sense today. Keep kicking ass and the Downtown Independent will keep providing a place for indie cinema.
...please send the bomb squad some more RED Bull and Z Pizza, hopefully it's going to be a busy couple of weeks.

edit: it would be nice if the projector market caught up to the camera market soon :-)

Well, as a recent purchaser of a RED, it's kind of a bummer to see such a quick reduction in the price of a new product. That means the price that you can rent yourself out for with a package will reduce too. But this is a camera I have grown to love. Having shot on the Alexa and F65 many times, I've realized the amazing the power that the RED puts in our hands, and now at such a low price compared to those cameras. Cant' wait to see what else comes in the future.

I've knocked over 6 piggy banks in the last two hours. Gotta find a way to do this. It's literally an Epic deal.

Sorry, can't seem to find this and don't have time to search a gazillion posts.

Is the dragon upgrade free for those who purchased EPIC X cameras at full price (before this price cut).

If not, what is the price?

Thanks,

M

Quick question:

I know that the upgrade path from Scarlet to Epic isn't quite confirmed just yet, but...

There will now be (at least) 4 categories of Scarlet owners.

1. November 3rd
2. Pre-price change Owners
3. BT (pre-price change) Owners
4. Post-Price Change Owners

It's likely too soon to say -- but...

Question: Will the upgrade path be consistent from 1 through 3?

The reason I ask is because if the BT owners share the same (what I assume) costlier upgrade path as #4, then it would sort of affect the value of the #3s.

It's a REALLY GREAT deal if it's 1-3/4, it's a GREAT deal if it's 1-2/3-4.

So, either way, great.

Phil
hmmm... thanks for making me realize that I might be at the FRONT of the line for once here! anxiously awaiting the upgrade path announcement as well.

Read the first post

Dragon sensor upgrade is not included for any EPIC system purchased at the new pricing going forward. It will be a $6K upgrade.

On one hand I like the new prices, on the other I am not so much of a fan of how drastically they were cut. I think it will hinder the rental market a little bit. You can't really charge as much per day to rent the camera if the purchase price is that much lower.
seriously !?! please.
