  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

I think one problem with modern forms of communicating..ie texting, forums, blogs...people's comments or views can be misconstrued and taken out of context.

Perfect timing. My 3 Scarlet purchase just turned into an Epic and 2 Scarlet purchase.

Because majority of movies in theaters right now are 3d. Which RED is better at.

More bigger blockbusters? The Avengers.. Well, that argument is over.

Professionals are just now adopting RED. ARRI has been the standard forever. Now people are breaking the mold and going to RED. I don't understand how you don't get that.

Steven Soderbergh was an early adopter and so was Peter Jackson. David Fincher has been into digital since Zodiac, so of course it was the next step. James Cameron is all about 3D, so Epics are perfect choices for him. And the rest of those people you named, probably shot RED with a huge part of it due to how well it shoots 3D.

You can not deny that the industry standard has been ARRI for a long time.
That's a convenient cop out to admit you're wrong but to excuse it by saying well Red only shoots more movies because it's better than 3d. Ok that's fine, it's better at 3d but it still is shooting more movies which still proves my point so case closed on that.

If by "just now people are starting to adopt Red" you mean 2007 to present then I agree with you. But considering Red was created in 2007 that would be kind of a pointless thing to say. You gave reasons for why every director shoots Red yet it still proves the point that they shoot Red and Red is known and thus nullifies your argument which is that Red is only now becoming known so I'm not sure how exactly you're saying.

It's cool I mean I'm not one of those blowhard Red acolytes of the Church of Red so I'm not just blindly defending it but to say Red is "just now gaining acceptance" when every major director on earth not named Spielberg has shot all their recent or upcoming movies on it just sounds like the words of an amateur or someone new to the Red camera world.

One last thing...... : made in the USA. I forgot about this till just now. Thanks for giving Americans jobs, Jim. Both in RDC, and to the customers putting the cameras to work.

Vote Jim this Tuesday!

Im sorry, name all of those directors?

Here are my thoughts:

I know people feel very pissed with the new price structure. Let's look at the pros and cons of buying into RED as a brand in light of today's incredible announcement: (let me first of all declare I own a Red Scarlet, so I am able to try and rationalise a situation that's making many people blue with rage and others pink with happiness - I don't fall into either category as I'm still trying to pay off my investment at an average speed):

PROS
- Easier for folk like me to get onto the high-end Red ladder
- 5K now more accessible to the masses, together with higher frame rates, shame about the crop factor...
- Compatible accessories, movable from Scarlet to Epic (lucky for us, unlucky for Red 1 owners)
- For those who have bought their Epics some time ago and made a loada cash on the back of their purchases, well done you! By now you have hopefully paid for your cameras several times over.
- We have two viable choices for native editing workflows, even though one stinks (FCPX), sorry I just cannot comprehend the damn thing having been a FCP editor for 8 years.
- The world is your oyster, go out there and create amazing movies because "you're worth it!" Meaning that making good movies is less about how much cash you have to spend on them and more about your creative flair.

CONS
- I have no idea how much my Scarlet is worth anymore, if I were to sell it right now to either buy an Epic or just to squander it in Blackpool, the British equivalent of Vegas.
- People who bought an Epic recently have spent $20K+ and they are only entitled to a $4,000 voucher (sounds unfair)
- People who bought an Epic in a not too recent past are not entitled to a voucher, not even to a Red branded baseball cap or key ring (sounds very unfair and makes some people think... if I buy a Sony and try and sell it in two years time, maybe it won't depreciate as much, maybe it's a bit more stable as an investment)
- If you try and sell an Epic today, don't. Just stick with Red and continue making money with it, as you won't get much money for it second hand. Just look at the Red 1. It started a revolution, yet you may find it at a car boot sale near you for the same price (or cheaper) than a vintage 16mm Bolex.

CONCLUSION
Technology is evolving at blinding speeds. In a way, the same way Red has shot to notoriety by making the first 'affordable' 4K camera the world as ever seen, leaving Arri reeling and resorting to cold war espionage techniques, they too are could loose out with their latest move, creating a mutiny amongst its faithful heard.

BUT....
- Feel the force my son! Trust your instinct and skills and continue making great movies, because in the end of the day, that's why you got into this business in the first place, right? Cameras are only a means to an end. (will I sell my Scarlet? Why?? I love it, it shoots 4K! I just bought it! Who would have thought a year or so ago I would be the proud owner of one?). The tools we have are the tools we have. I too feel compelled to just keep on buying kit and cameras, it's kind of addictive. But I would say one thing: if Red would pack their bags today and sell their company for 1 buck to a beggar on the street, they would be remembered as the company who devolved the power of making films back to the filmmakers, the guys who wouldn't dream of making a movie because they didn't have the cash or the trust of financiers and were blind enough to risk it all and come out winners on the other side.

I think everyone worldwide should turn off their RED cameras at 00:01 GMT or whatever it's called now, for a moment of silence in mourning for those who are against the repricing. Then, at 00:02 everyone should turn on their cameras as a moment of celebration for everyone for the price change. And then just go on about business as usual.

When you look at RED...what they have done, where they are presently, and what is to become of their future, it's hard not to get ecstatic. More RED's in the community, no matter what flavor, forces post-labs, production companies, ad agencies, producers, directors, etc to seriously consider it as their high-end digital acquisition tool. This is good for all of us. I think it's just taking longer for those who recently purchased an Epic to see the benefit. Trust me, it's there.

Great post Chris.
PS a discount on dragon it will be nice hahahaha

People keep linking to the films shot digitally wikipedia page, and glancing through it can tell you something. But here's some summary:

RED released the RED One in 2007 - 70 feature films shot digitally since on all their models.
Arri Alexa released 2010 - 70 Feature films shot digitally on it.

Genesis has had 30 total shot, the Sony CineAlta entire line has had 25 shot on it. The Viper has had 5, as well as the Arriflex. The Canon C300 has had 1, and the C5DMKII has had 4.

Take what you want from the stats, I'm just pointing them out. I, myself, have shot on the Red ONE MX and C5DMKII of those cameras listed.

Jim and Jarred tell us the truth...are you guys ALIENS? Because honestly the way you talk and share your thoughts and actions with your customers is out of space. I truly never seen this on any industry and even less when you are literally TOP 1 Cinema Camera maker changing the industry.

I am truly blessed to be part of this family and I am enjoying this great journey of greatness...Not to mention every time I call or send an email, the responses I receive are as if i am talking to a family member or a great old friend!!!

thanks for sharing and putting on our shoes.

Love!

About resale value:

"Not putting miles on your Ferrari is like not having sex with your girlfriend so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend." - Jim Glickenhaus

Allow me to indulge in a related tangent. There's a difference between photographers and camera owners. Camera owners protect their cameras from damage so well that they never take any good photos with them. Photographers will ignore damage to the camera if they can get a good photograph. Your camera is disposable. Your images are priceless.

BTW I think that some people are too harsh on the dissenters. I think that the dissenters are wrong. But I take them seriously and I don't see any value in insults.

I'm a hobbyist yet to buy my first RED, so I certainly understand where you are coming from. If I'd bought an EPIC M and not done much with it, I'd feel sad over losing $20k or so of value. But I bought a Nikon D4 instead of an EPIC because, well, I had $6k not $60k :(. Since I need to be light and agile in my photography, the D4 was probably better for me than the RED even though I know I would have loved owning one.

That being said, I find the anger and upset a little overdone, mainly because you should know a camera is a depreciating asset. I bought my 27" iMac with a SSD and 1TB internal hard drive for nearly $3,000 two years ago. Doubt I could even get $1,000 for it today. Electronic equipment is never worth as much as it was six months ago. Most of the real pros here have made the price difference and more in the time they've had the camera.

I love the story of Joseph Hutson, 19 year old kid, who somehow scraped up the $58-odd K for an EPIC-M, got the ear of a major figure in Dubai's government and became official Cinephotographer for him. I have the oddest feeling, in view of the rather modest and restrained(*) lifestyle he records on Facebook, that he has gotten more than his money's worth out of his Epic.

So no, don't invest any money in cameras that you can't easily afford, or that you can't earn back in six months to a year. I think Jim would agree with me there and in fact he has occasionally written messages encouraging people to spend less thanks to the upcoming economic bad times.

I feel bad for the three or four people who have recently bought these cameras and have lost money. But for every one of them I'd say there are at least 10 or 20 who have made tremendous profits. RED is the camera company that does great things. That's why we love them, whether the financial deal works for us or not.

(*) Approximately as modest and restrained as the Emir :).

As a Scotsman, now at home in Canada, I see Jim Jannard as embodying the pioneering spirit that took the U.S. to its greatest heights. It seems to me that not every American filmmaker or influential corner of the film industry quite recognizes the importance of Jim's contributions to that industry, to their art, and to their country. But that will surely change one day. Soon, I hope.

Jim,

10 years ago i had a dream of flying helicams in movies. I have had countless dreams (awake and asleep) skimming over landscapes from a birds POV. Even though I spent every waking moment thinking about it, I never thought it would ever actually happen. I always knew i had the tools to do it, all except for one that is - the camera. The Arri was just too big and expensive.

I owe two of the best moments of my life to you and the gang at Red. The first - being on location a little over a year ago flying the Epic M in a feature film, and the second - sitting in the theatre, seeing our surreal shots for the first time. The producer wanted us to fly the Alexa but its size and weight wouldn't work. I suggested the shiny new Epic and he reluctantly agreed.

As you can see others have followed and it is pretty awesome shit! If through some miracle, overreaching regulations don't kill this exciting filmmaking offspring, we will owe much of its birth and future success to you. Thanks for giving me the tool to realize my life's dream at a price I could afford.

One question for RED that bears asking: now that the R1 is end of life and the remaining ones sell for $4K, basically meaning that's the market value of that camera, can we get a cheaper than $850 transfer of ownership only for the R1? I've bought a couple of them recently from private owners and, besides being busy shooting, really hesitate to send them to RED because $1700 is not a small amount to just change the cameras to my name. So, only for the R1, can there be an option for cheaper transfer fees?

Respectfully,
