  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

As I said before, everything in the electronics world changes... usually for the better, cheaper and faster. EPIC and Scarlet just did. Right now.

We have built an incredibly efficient factory in Irvine, California and over time learned how to make EPICs in quantity, lowered our assembly costs, found better suppliers and fully paid off our NRE. When we assembled the 1st EPIC camera in Stage 6 at RED Studios Hollywood it took our team 12 hours. It took two more days to de-bug. Today we can assemble an EPIC in 13 minutes and 95+% need no re-work after diagnostics and testing. It is a testament to our manufacturing team and supply chain teams.

Since our costs are now significantly lower we are re-pricing our cameras as of now.

For those of you that purchased a new Scarlet ( not battle tested ) or EPIC brain on or after Oct. 1st 2012, the next time you order accessories from RED you will receive a discount to use towards that purchase. $1000 for Scarlet and $4000 for EPIC. Talk to your Bomb Squad representative when you are ready to use this discount.

Now… here is the new pricing:

5K EPIC-X Brain- $19,000

5K EPIC-X Monochrome Brain- $20,000

5K EPIC-M Brain- $24,000

5K/4K Scarlet Brain- $7,950

4.5K RED ONE M-X Battle Tested- $4000 (includes CF or SSD recording module). The RED ONE is End of Life. Battle tested is all that will be available from here on out.

Due to high anticipated volumes, plan on extended response and processing times.

Dragon sensor upgrade is not included for any EPIC system purchased at the new pricing going forward. It will be a $6K upgrade.

Pricing is being updated on www.red.com as I post this.

Jim

I think this is price war at work
We will see if that kills / slows down business for all competitors. Will cause an effect for sure.
I would expect the actual RED owner base to double shortly. Photographers buy the EPICs and Monochrome EPICs, Indepent movie makes will go for all packages, especially the R1 M-X for students... If there were not the accessories. ;-)

With a BMD CC on order I still stay really calm, not a second nervous. I still have may R1 M-X (stage 2) and EPIC and want something light for private use. The gap thats not yet filled by RED.

However, I welcome all new users out there to jump onto the RED bandwagon.

PS: We have developed a very nice workflow around RED that runs fine on "normal" computers. That is more true now than ever, because you new guys will likely not be the customers for RED ROCKETs or dedicated hardware at all. You are ought to safe money and make efficent workflow for low cost independent productions. Watch out...

It is cheaper to buy a BT RED ONE than to upgrade your RED ONE M to MX.

Jim

Is there any upgrade path for us with a RED One M upgrade to the M-X?

If so how much?

Ye Gods.

How long does it take you to earn $20k with your Scarlet?! That's what's up. Get out and get paid and make money!

Mike

Totally agree :) BUT all the jobs i get turned for that i bid, they end up wanting slo-motion.... That's all i want!

BT MX ordered :)

Thanks Jim, Jarred and everyone at RED!

Mike

Just curious to know if I was the first? :)

Mike

Well that would put it basically around $50 a day then like I said...lol
Nope, on average that would make it about $450/day. Realistically, I could see rentals going anywhere for $300-$600/day depending on the package and the market you are in. But one also has to be realistic that this is a 5 year old camera. Demand will probably be in favor of Scarlet/Epic, especially if rental rates now drop because of new pricing. Where Red One MX still has a lot of value is for indie filmmakers, production companies (where model of camera is less important than the results you provide client), etc. That's your real income generator right there. If client doesn't care what camera you shoot with all you have to do is give them great looking stuff and at $4K (at least $8K realistically with some accessories) you should have a great chance of being able to achieve that if you've got some chops.

The Epic is now so affordable that many will be able to buy one just as a backup, or they
will use the extra one and turn their single camera shoot into a two camera shoot.

:)

I just heard an explosion...it was the sound of all the heads at Sony, Canon, Panasonic and ARRI exploding at once...

Lights are off NYC, Disney bought Star Wars, now this.

Seriously this crazy. I hope the last 2 work out for the better.

It's the end of the world. Haven't you heard? The Mayans made it pretty clear, they said the 7th sign of the coming apocalypse is that "the light gatherers shall fall, and all shall perish with them".
