Michael, are you renting the Dragon for these tests or do you own it?
Also, is this the old OLPF or the new OLPF/sensor calibrations/color science tweaks? I know some people think it shouldn't matter but I think it's relevant.
That should not affect performance!
Hey Michael,
Thanks for taking the time to do this test. I'm performing a looks test at my office with just the GH4. Would it be possible for you to create a LUT that I could import on my end in FCP X using LUTutiity?
In response to the above requests, I did another run, this time with the GH4 recording:
There is no question they botched the test.
So far my test comparing the Scarlet and the GH4 are disappointing, meaning the GH4 is not getting anything near the Scarlet, except that the resolution is somewhat close, but defiantly not better as claimed by the NS test. Contrast is at least 2 stops less and pulling anything up from the shadows is simply unusable wit the GH4. I think if you have good lighting and are aiming at a hard grade (like the GH4 youtube demo films from panasonic) then you might be happy with the camera - otherwise RED still rules by far.
Thoughts on the GH4 from my tests:
Try Natural instead of Cine-D. Cine-D has a little hue wobble in the color. Natural does not and is actually slightly less saturated.
Modify that Natural picture profile by taking Constrast, Sharpness and Saturation to -5.
For a non-bumpy curve, try i.Dynamic medium, with Shadows and Highlights at 0.
Here are some tests I did, if you are interested:

I also recommend white balance at somewhere between 4000 and 5000 - but I see you're already doing thatWB at 5600K does some very odd things.

We didn't really "claim" anything. If you wanted to create a set of circumstances that would yield similar results to ours it wouldn't be that difficult. Use the same lens, shoot with sharpness at 0 on the GH4, and that's about it. Obviously if we used Master Primes and pushed the in cam sharpness down it would have been a landslide the other way. We don't own Master Primes though. The biggest thing that test showed me? I will NEVER use that lens on the Epic again. Ha ha! I had only used it on there a few times before but hadn't zoomed in that close to see how it looked. Yikes.
Agree with you though. The GH4 just falls apart when you try to shoot for any sort of post work. The colors get really strange and the shadows are bizarre. Good BTS camera and I'm sure others will dig into it and find a good image but it's not doing it for me at the moment. Looks great when you use the "non flat" profiles though! Our plan is to use it to record a ton of material that doesn't require a second of post work. For that, I think it's a great camera. For anything else...not my cup o' tea.
lol I thought my post on nofilmschools FB last night would get your attention here! Glad to have a fruitful discussion on it, and cheers! PS how come there are always so many anti red shooters on your FB, (it makes for fun banter though)?! Everyone calling Red expensive makes me laugh when Arris cost an arm and leg and are more "popular anyway" (in certain circles) lmfao!
See if it works as a 4K B/crash cam? I can think of many ways the GH4 could compliment an Epic package...I truly do not see why anyone would waste their breath comparing the two cameras in any serious technical way.
#4 - Inconsistent framing - It doesn't matter. Scale the 5K down to meet the 4K GH4 or scale the 4K up to 5K. Doesn't matter. Get them both to the same resolution. 4096x2160 vs. 4096x2160. Blow up each by 300%. It doesn't matter if the barn is larger in the GH4 frame or not. You're still looking at the same number of horizontal and vertical pixels. In your 400% zoom in of the tree you scaled each to match which isn't necessary and isn't fair to the GH4.
I think changing the f stop to match DOF gives one camera an advantage over the other IF the lens you're using changes in performance.
If the framing isn't the same it's impossible to upscale or downscale to get valid 1:1 scale comparisons.
