Atlas Lens Co. - Orion Series 2X Anamorphic Prime Lenses

Atlas Lens Co. New Orion 25mm T/2.0 Anamorphic Lens and LF Extender

By Cinema5D

Wide-angle anamorphic lenses, and especially 2X ones, are not easy to manufacture and usually comes at a high price. During NAB 2019 we had a chance to talk with Dan Kanes from Atlas Lens Co. about two new exciting products: an Orion 25mm T/2.0 anamorphic lens and an LF Extender.

We used Tiffen 138mm Round Diopters this weekend, (+0.5, +1, +2). They all covered the A Set (40, 65, 100mm) + Gemini 5k 6:5 just fine. You might need something bigger for 32mm and especially 25mm when they are released. I wouldn’t go any smaller on diopter size for these lenses, the 40mm is pretty wide on a full height 18mm tall sensor.

Interested to hear everyone's experiences with CA on the Orions.

It was the one downside of them for me, and it was a pretty big downside. I can correct for it in the grade, but felt pretty unimpressive. However it was only under specific circumstances involving the sun on polished chrome, so by no means a problem otherwise.

EDIT: but could also be operator error.

Well, it’s there. I think you have to either embrace the imperfect look, or just plan around it (or use other glass if CA is a major concern for your director or client). Stopping down helps, avoiding clipped highlights and speculars helps, avoiding high contrast backlit situations helps (although that’s also usually what looks best photographically IMHO). I’d probably pick Master Anamorphics if you need clean 2x PL mount glass.
