  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atlas Lens Co. - Orion Series 2X Anamorphic Prime Lenses

I would definitely go 40-100mm instead of 32-80mm

As on monstro a the 32mm Ana feels as just as wide as an 15mm spherical on S35 sensor... how often do you want something that wide? Not to often I think.

The 100mm feels like a 50mm on s35... how often do you use something longer than 50mm? quite often, no?

So to me I would definitely pick the longer set and hope that they make even longer lenses. And I think I would think the same even if using Gemin, dragon or helium. Super wide ana like 32mm is usually not where you find gold. Sure can be nice with a super wide once in a while but 40mm is defiantly more in the zone as I see it.

But yes never wrong to get all, and possibly two of each. :)

Anyone needed to have their in for service or colimation yet?

Interesting notes. I also was trying to decide between A and B. I think A is likely more versatile. That 65 especially is so nice!

I was leaning towards Set A for that reason but a case can be made for getting set B along with a PL 2X extender to cover your entire focal range.

Just shot the 100 with a 2x doubler, nice stuff

In the end of 2018 I had Nick Kova's Atlas Orion 40mm to play for two weeks. This is some of the footage I shot while in Connecticut's woods.

30fps played at 24fps on the Sony A7s II, 4k Full Frame sensor. 2.40:1 Aspect Ratio.

Fotodiox ND Throttle for controlling exposure.
1/48th shutter, T2.8, ISO1600.

In this review the shift of the asymetrical bokeh (puns incoming) towards even stronger asymetrical shapes (cylcindrical compared to really oval) is actually really bothering me. What's the cause? Does every 40mm have it. I specifically don't mean the bokeh becoming less oval towards the edges (as can be seen by plenty lenses off center, spherical ones as well) but the right-left gradient. Anybody notice this on his/her Orion?

What are the thoughts about the 40mm in general?
Thinking about ordering a set (or maybe 2 focal lenghts to begin with) and somehow I can't get over the 40mm supposedly being the weak link in the series despite arguably being the most useful one if you can't get all the focal lenghts at once. Maybe skip on the 40 and get 32, 50 and eventuallly the 100mm?
There was a point being made here that the 32mm is actually crazy wide. Are the 3mm compared to a Lomo 35 for example that noticeable? Somehow the 35mm never seemed to wide to me with the Lomos if one can't get the angle with let's say the 50. I feel like the split towards wide angle / normal / telephoto is more pronounced with the 32/50/100 split?

Has anyone gotten the interchangeable EF mount already as there is no price listed?

Not sure what you mean by your confusing description. A picture would be much better.

Here you go. The asymetry in the bokeh is pretty apparent.

If the string lights a person is using for bokeh twist away from the camera and are occluded by wire they won’t have the same bokeh shape.

To me that looks like curly wire string lights. Our bokeh doesn’t look like that under normal lighting or we would be getting a ton of complaints everyday. I’ll try to shoot a 15 second test to show you “it don’t be like that.”

Here you go

Some favorite clips from the last 8months of shooting. So many people to thank for these images coming to life, especially Logan Lemmon (AC, Part-Time Gaffer) and Dan Kanes (Atlas Lens Co) for their continued support and encouragement.
Footage here taken from short films, music videos, commercials, and personal projects. A mix of spherical and anamorphic, Alexa and Red cameras.

I can post a quick test with the upcoming 1.6X Atlas “Universe” Extender after the 25th this month, I’m travelling right now.

We were planning to announce it during NAB but I’ll give you a little sneak peak.

It works with the 32/40/50/65/80/100 lenses - so we called it “Universe”

They also work with the Duclos Expanders (1.7x and 2X) and the IBE.
