Hello,

So I'm reaching the end of my film. Finishing in resolve. Shot 5k anamorphic, 5k full frame, with lots of HD material. When I was in Avid I could easily put image/resize in a video track then use crop for the top and bottom and line it up with the 2.4:1 footage. So basically I'm putting a matte over all the non anamorphic footage. I had to use the crop effect because nothing perfectly lined up with the anamorphic footage. I didn't carry this effect over into resolve for many reasons. But now I need to put the mask on in resolve. My colorist isn't sure how to do this. I thought I would post on here to see if there's a simple way. For some footage that's supposed to be surveillance footage, I will also need to crop the left and right. Thanks.

If you make the timeline aspect ratio 2.4:1 in the master project settings (timeline resolution, there's options for 2K and 4K DCI scope) you'll mask the top and bottom on any non-anamorphic footage by default. Or you can go to Color > Output Blanking and add whatever letterboxing you want there.

For cropping, on the edit page you can click on the clip you want to crop, then click the effect inspector button (far right above the timeline) and you should have the option in the menu that appears to add crop to your clip.

This is based on Resolve 10, I haven't moved over to 11 yet.

I have used a translucent matte to help judge how to crop 5K 1.9 down to 2.40. The advantage of this is a) the white lines won't burn in your monitor over a long period of time, and b) the translucent edge helps you see how much image area is available.
