  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ASIC issue...

Not open for further replies.
Nov. 30th announcement is still on track for Nov. 30th.

All stages are affected, including TATTOO.

Could be possible to make revision of the stages that means to add one more stage.

This could be stage five with M-X sensor upgrade only to existing R1 customers and former reservation holders.

It's just an idea and no any pressure if doesn't fit in the whole RED/EPIC/SCARLET program.

A 2sec. boot-time camera can't be done in 2 days... but we want it and we'll be here waiting for it! Thanks for the update, always really appreciated!

ASICs are done in layers... This is quite a feat considering that industry experts say this is the single most complicated ASIC ever attempted.

Jim

Jim, is it the fabrication aspect that is the most complicated or the programming?

Having done one so complicated will it make the next one easier or is the process always fraught when pushing the boundaries?

It is still refreshing for a manufacturer to be so candid!

Mike Brennan

BTW... this is the Side Module Upgrade. We have added a run/stop button and user settings buttons to...

Don't think you can distract us from your failings by just throwing up some ren---OOO shiny! :D

My jesting only comes from love. Sorry to hear about the delay, but seeing as I'm one of those waiting for the currently completely untimelined Monstro line I suppose I can just add 30 days to "someday" which is also "someday". So in that regard I don't see any delay at all. :)

You know what's awesome about this delay though. That means theoretically they were ready to start testing it NOW in the middle of November. Had it worked... wow I don't know what else they would have to do but it seems like that would have put them ahead of schedule for first startup before the end of the year.

EDIT: Hahahaa damnit, Ace already beat me to it. I'll chalk that up to you always being 20 hours ahead. :D It's what Friday there already? ;)

I think Red Team will not be just waiting for re-spin this one detail I think they will progress in other details so this delay will not stop for 30 days the whole movement to the aim. So this delay is not a big problem. And I think there will not be some another big problem which will turn our hopes into Vavilon's Tower. And all af us will be able to shot our movie projects on Scarlet by the end of 2010. So this delay in 30 days is not a big problems just a little one. And I think now the shedule of Scarlet on 30th November will be change according to this re-spin and will be more reality.

No worries, Red Team.
We will be patient while you get it just right. Thank you for keeping us informed. Happy to have another month of Red One revenue.
Thank you for the addition of the run button on the operator side of the brain.
Cheers,
Harry

Jim, what about R-1 sensor upgrade program? It would be nice if we can improve our existing cameras while waiting for EPIC.

I don't see this delay as bad news. If you didn't set lofty goals Red wouldn't be Red.
Thank you for the hard work and congratulations on the many achievements behind you!

Yes. Is the M-X upgrade going to take place only after Epic is ready? Sorry if this was clarified before and I missed it.

I would assume 101% of the resources are focused on making the 2nd generation ready ASAP.
However, it would be great, if it weren't a hard thing to do, to see the M-X upgrade happening earlier than that.

I am pulling for you guys and gals at Red to pull this off. I worry that the big boys have seen too much and are about to roll out something of their own. IMHO, your saving grace is your unique approach to doing business, listening to customers, communication with customers, and honest updates and information. Sometimes though, I am concerned that too much is being shared and the competition is circling like a pack of wolves waiting for a weak moment to pounce on their prey. I want Red to succeed. I love the Red One cameras we have. It is a product that a person can easily get passionate about. I understand the desire to avoid the pitfalls of the Red One delivery and start up issues. I have faith in your company and I am keeping my fingers crossed that you can hit the bulls eye again. Good luck to all of you and thanks to you and to your families for the sacrifices they've made while you folks toil away in the wee hours when most of us are enjoying family time. Have a great Thanksgiving Red Team!

To put things in perspective, Jim, a thirty day delay is nothing in IC development. Unless it makes you miss your slot in the fab line.

Good luck with the re-spin!

ASICs are done in layers... a metal spin means that the overall design is good but one or more of the layers (of 30) needs to be changed. It is a MUCH better situation than a full re-spin. One takes a month... the other can take several months.

I have to say that 95+% of our ASIC works great. This is quite a feat considering that industry experts say this is the single most complicated ASIC ever attempted.

Jim

The Red ONE is FPGA based, hence not (primarily) ASIC based, as I understand.

That makes this ASIC development effort for Epic/Scarlet Red's first such endeavor.

So what did they do? They opted to develop the most advanced one ever built. As their very first effort.

Man.

Well played, Jim... well played.

Is there a mini shock mount chasis built inside to hold that mic?
(thinking about handling noise)

Really Impressed

Really Impressed

Man, I wouldn't care too much about such delays after my recent viewings of shot-on-RED features...

I have to admit that I still had some doubts about the whole RED thing until a few months ago. Especially, until a few weeks ago. But then I finally got the opportunity to watch shot-on-RED features in the theater (the ultimate test). I watched the Che movies and also Gamer and District 9. I deliberately watched them in film projection and also in digital (Christie 2K) projections, when it was available.

Wow, was I impressed...

I mean, I knew that RED is good, but I still wasn't completely sure if it really is comparable to film quality or it`s "almost there". The pictures looked perfect and I think that in some respects, RED1 is even better than film ever was... I know that it takes much more than the camera to achieve such visuals, but RED1 is obviously capable of delivering perfect results, when it's in the right hands.

Storywise, Gamer and District 9 suck tremendously, but visually - Wow... I mean.. it was a joy to watch... I never expected it to be *this* good... The Che movies were also very good, I enjoyed them both visually and as stories. Che, part Two looked a bit better to me visually, as the first part had a bit of video-ish look, I don't know why... (And yeah, if anyone is wondering why communism never worked, watch the ending scene of Che, part One...)

--

So, I watched most of these movies in both film and digital projection, and they looked very good every time. I still prefer film projection for some reason , but the difference is negligible and I still haven`t watched a 4K projection.. can't wait for this tech to hit my local theaters.. I also had the pleasure to watch 720p and/or 1080p copies of the movies at home :coolgleamA: and the *home cinema* experience was also very good. I think they've added a healthy amount of grain to the BluRay versions of Gamer and District 9, which is a smart thing to do. :yesnod:

So.. apart of the whole RED fanboy-ism thing, the digital cinema revolution has really won and the RED guys take the credit for doing it. I was thinking of shooting something in 16mm film just to get the feeling of it "before the old West is gone", but after seeing what the RED1 is capable of, I might very well just skip that.

And the new cams will be better.

It's a seriously great thing that RED has done. It would have happened sooner or later, anyway, but it's good to have it now... or almost now. Needless to say, I prefer to have my 2/3" interchangeable baby as soon as possible.

The future is bright. :yesnod:

I thought the same after seeing Che. I saw it in 4K and it was like I was viewing something almost as live or real. It was like viewing something out of a window. I fell in love with the visuals and realize I can get the look that I want, as if I am capturing something from my own eyes.

Indeed. I would hate to be NVidia right now. They must have had a really rough time this year with Fermi.
