  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Artbeats Shoots Epic Aerials over DC

am i the only who sees severe blue channel noise? and these are small images.. i bet 4k looks horrible.

can we get 1:1 cropped grabs of the noise.

thanks.

AB

Hi AB, these are literally just screen captures of the RedCine viewer, not even rendered, nor color corrected to compensate. I'll try to do a serious 1:1 sample later.

Bet these shots will be showing up in quite a few movies and TV shows pretty soon. Great stuff!

The presumed right to travel, however, is firmly established in U.S. law and precedent. In U.S. v Guest, 383 U.S. 745 (1966), the Court noted, "It is a right that has been firmly established and repeatedly recognized." In fact, in Shapiro v Thompson, 394 U.S. 618 (1969), Justice Stewart noted in a concurring opinion that "it is a right broadly assertable against private interference as well as governmental action. Like the right of association, ... it is a virtually unconditional personal right, guaranteed by the Constitution to us all." It is interesting to note that the Articles of Confederation had an explicit right to travel; it is now thought that the right is so fundamental that the Framers may have thought it unnecessary to include it in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

Why couldn't you find to rent in NY or East Coast

Fujinon 14.5–45mm / T2.0

or

Fujinon 18-85mm / T2.0 ???!!!

Epic with MX needs a lot light at night and fast lens is a must for that but hopefully Dragon will help later to solve that issue.

Best solution is still to get Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH on Epic that maybe is not wide enough

but the focal length of 50mm has the best optical performance regarding barrel distortion at panning and movement, etc... that mostly visible at many of wider lenses.

Recently I had aerial shots of Venice (Italy) out of helicopter and the best shots were when I one another zoom lens zoomed to 50mm.

You can see it here>>>

That means Noctilux could be a perfect lens for any night aerial shooting with Epic or Scarlet-X.

I Agree,
Even though it looks beautiful, the big slow zoom prop kind of take away a lot of the fun. Imagine a Noctilux wide open and then HDRx with a few stops under. That would have been insane.

When it comes to DC our choices were pretty limited because of the restricted areas. Since we couldn't fly over the mall or get close to the capital building, we needed a lens that could punch in close enough. The 12:1 was our best option, although I agree it's got its own set of issues.

Sheesh! I do recognize a similar feeling since I suspect very big guns were tracking us while flying in the restricted zone, sobering...

P

Fun stuff! :) Seriously though. Working with the army guys just makes it so much more meaningful. Love it. And everything looks really great Phil! Bet you have TONS of amazing material which makes you feel all that red tape was way, totally, absolutely worth the effort; and I can't imagine how much red tape it must have been...

I would never consider shooting on an Eclipse with anything shorter than an 18-85mm; taking into account the big costs of the mount, mount shipping, mount tech, pilot, aerial DP, and the heli itself... Ouch. Those days need to be designed to be acquiring constantly, with carefully planned routes and only landing when absolutely necessary to re-load magazines.

I love that you shot 30fps 1/48th. I think that is an excellent choice. Did you also shoot any 48fps 1/48th by chance? I assume you only used 256GB magazines, but what compression did you pick?

Thanks for posting.

Compression was 8:1 daytime, 6:1 night. Yes, almost all of it was shot on 256GB cards. I did have a few 128GBs for some short flights.

Thanks Roberto!

ISO 1600 is a little higher than I will typically go on Epic.

Tom, It turns out that I needed to apply a grain reducer. I ended up using Neat Video and it worked out well. So, I agree that ISO1600 was pushing it, especially for the color temp of 3500K.
