  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Arrow 55 Group Buy?

While Miller does not offer the Arrow 55 head in a kit with the Solo legs, Ael can package the two together for you. I really like the solo legs for when you're using a small kit out "in the wild." The legs are essentially three heavy duty boom poles attached to a tripod bowl at the top. They work extremely well and collapse to a tiny size. Not for every job but for what they do they are great.

Nikon 400 f/3.5 AIS,
I'm picking up one of these on thursday for 750euros, is that a good price? Cant believe I found one.
I was going to go with the 80-400 but the variable aperture was worrying me too much. I was planning on the 80-200 2.8 as my mid range and 17-35 2.8 as my wide boy. (and maybe a peleng to be silly with):)

Thanks Mitch
I would be interested in a arrow 55 and Solo Eng kit, but what would the import duties be if I would purchase from the US?

I have been able to source all my Red accessories (batteries, cf cards) in Europe and only the bare bones red package (not even an lcd) from the US. Turned out much cheaper this way.

Thanks Mitch

If you'd like to get a quote, please PM me with your email contact and I'll ask a Sales Rep to get back to you.

No word yet from Miller. I'm going to shoot an email over with the latest numbers and maybe that will stoke a response. Mitch, I might foward the Miller rep (Dug) over to you to pick up the numeric discussions... Miller may not want to give out their numbers to us common folk.

Good choices...

The Nikon 400 f/3.5 AIS is a superb lens - if you can find one. Yes, IMO 750 euros is a good price for it. Nature shooters tend to hang onto them. It is crisp throughout the aperture range, plus it is lighter and less expensive than the Nikon 400 f/2.8.

The variable aperture and the slowness of the 80-400 kept me from buying it. The 80-200 2.8 is a great lens, as is the 17-35 2.8.

I own a lot of primes, but speaking just in terms of zooms for adventure travel and nature production, my kit includes: Nikon 17-35 2.8, RED 18-50 f/2.8 (PL mount), Nikon 80-200 ED f/2.8, Nikon 50-300 f/4.5 AIS, and Canon 150-600 f/5.6L (Century PL Mount). For adventure travel and nature primes I use: Nikon 14mm ED F/2.8, RED 300 f/2.8 (PL mount), Nikon 400 f/3.5 AIS. All my Nikon lenses have their original Nikon mount. I use multiple screw-on ND filters in various strengths, and pola filters with all of these lenses - IMO matte boxes are too bulky and unnecessary for adventure travel and nature cinematography.

Miller got in touch with me today... they're still working on pricing, and are going to try to get some hard numbers to me later this week.

Miller and AbelCine want to set up a couple of package deals to streamline the pricing/ordering process.

So, to better design the package choices, we need to figure out what you want the head to sit on... which tripod would you want? If applicable, would you rather it came with mid-level or floor spreaders? Or, do you want to buy only the head without any sticks? Please post your responses!

I'd be interested in a arrow 55 head + SOLO VJ legs combo. No spreader needed...

I couldn't wait and have gone with a local dealer in Sydney....but will be interested to see what price aussie's could get a head and legs, with mid-spreader (package number 1718) for.

count me in for a 55,

Any interest in the miller ProJib also. BH has a kit buy that includes the arrow 55, sticks, and proJib.

I'm going to be hiking with gear into rocky wilderness, also plan on handing off the tripod from one person to another while loading/unloading into boats. Would you recommend the Solo legs or would aluminum legs be better suited to withstand potentially rocky impacts?

I though that the entire reason for a group buy is to get a large order for a discounted price.....could we not get a group rate??? or should we all individually email Able Cine for an individual rate???? How do we know if we want "in" on the group purchase if there isn't a group rate posted?

Lee. yep. I though Miller could work with us. Instead they seem to be going through dealers. a group buy would be awesome...

while talking tripods. does anyone know of a super cheap head that can hold 24 pounds (not fluid) maybe even a still camera head.

I understand that they would end up going thru a dealer but what is the big deal about posting a price.....especially for a group buy. It would be a special offer with a deadline and a minimum order to get the deal. Then you could determine if you were interested in the deal or not. Instead, everyone interested has to individually email Able and get a rate. Able seems to post prices unless it's associated with RED. They have all kinds of prices on their site, but if it's RED related....private email only. It's kind of rediculous.

Last time I emailed Able it took days to get a response. They said it was because they get soooooo many emails, well no chit! That's because they refuse to post a price. They said it was because of currency exchange...blah, blah, blah....but they have no problem posting prices to all types of other goods thay sell that aren't directly related to RED.

Needless to say, I kept my Pancro order in place because it was so frustrating getting pricing on the Formatt filters.

Post a price to the group buy and we could all determine whether we are interested or not.

Sorry to ruffle any feathers....I just call it like I see it.

Hi guys, here's the sitch on the deal, as I understand it. I sent our potential purchase quantity to Miller. A Miller sales rep talked the Miller headquarters into giving us a deal on the price, and that price-break then got passed over to AbelCine, who will hopefully translate the discount directly into an equivalent savings over their regular price (I have no way of knowing if 100% of the savings will get across to the final sale price... just hoping for the best).

AbelCine only received the discount numbers at the end of this last week, on Friday. I'm guessing AbleCine might need a business day or two to get that deal into their system and properly inform the group.

After Friday, I pretty much became a bystander along with the rest of you. I don't know how much savings are in the deal, or whether AbleCine will openly publish those prices. I agree that it would be great if AbelCine could post the prices here on the board for us. One thing to keep in mind though, is that sometimes there are restrictions dictated by the product manufacturer when it comes to showing sale prices. The reason is that if a company offers a product at an unusually low price, its other wholesalers can get annoyed and then those wholesalers focus their annoyance back at the manufacturer. So Miller might want it kept quiet. If AbleCine says they need private emails to send out sale prices, then that might be at the request of Miller. If Miller doesn't care, but AbleCine still doesn't want to deal with posting prices except to private email... well, sometimes that's just how the world works and hopefully we're all tough enough to deal with it.

If AbleCine asks for private emails to get pricing info, and they can't respond quickly to our requests, then we'll have to deal with that by sharing our pricing info with one another as we each get it. But we should at least give AbleCine the benefit of the doubt until we're a bit further along in the process.

ok. well I got numbers back from Abel. maybe it was before the official group buy... anyone know of cheap options? BJ at Custom gave me some figures many months ago that were awesome. But at the point I was still looking at the 1030hds (which does not tilt 90 degrees)
