  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Arri launch new Camera at IBC, Alexa Amira.

It's like the Alexa, 2.88K raw is debayered and downscaled to 2K or 1080P RGB.

thanks David for clarifying... I wonder why peeps have mentioned that they need lenses with a larger image circle now, maybe their statements were in regards to the upcoming Arri 4K...

if the Amira uses the same Alev III CMOS sensor with a 8.25 micron pixel pitch, then capturing [2880 x variable] to output 2K (1.90 AR) or HD (1.78 AR) will get u a maximum active area with an image circle of 27.26mm (@ HD with 1.78 AR)... that is smaller than the image circle for the maximum active area on the Alexa XT...

nobody ever got fired for buying IBM equipment

IBM were great innovators.

In particular, they developed a well-known phrase, and the concept behind it: FUD.

I don't understand why people keep glossing over the cinema possibilities of the Amira (I understand why Arri would do it, just not why shooters would) - as far as I can tell, the majority of feature films shot on the Alexa actually record to ProRes4444 rather than Arriraw.

So I think Amira will end up being incredibly popular for features.

And as much as people keep glossing over the 'futureproofness' of 4K delivery, the simple fact is that 2K images looks wonderful on full-size cinema screens (I'd argue better than any 35mm release print I ever saw) and they look great on big flatscreen TVs. Whether those 2K images come from film, Red, Alexa or whatever else - the simple fact is, they look good in the viewing conditions we currently have in both cinemas and in our living rooms. And unless the screens we see in cinemas and our living rooms change drastically in the near future - those good-looking 2K images aren't going to become any less good looking anytime soon.

What does all this mean? It means stop stressing! We get beautiful images out of all these cameras these days - which means the decision of what to shoot on should simply fall to the camera/workflow features that are best suited to your production.

I was on a shoot yesterday on the original Alexa in which they sent Rec 709 to all the monitors but captured prores 422 for a local tv spot. The Amira is a great solution for lots of shoots, but still a bit hard to justify for me price wise as an owner op. I don't know if I want to buy another HD camera, not sure if I could make a return before 4k goes mainstream, but I've been thinking that 3 years now and it hasn't happened yet lol!

If I do buy an HD camera I think it would be a refurb Phantom before its an Arri...theres something magical about those high frame rates and showing reality in a way the human can't even truly experience first hand

around NAB 2014 and around €35.000 is the latest information i know, but could have been changed already again...

They will price themselves out of the market they are targeting if its anymore than 29000 euros, in the US anyways.
