That is really cool. I hope the trend in user-adjustable behind-the-lens filtration continues on both high end rental stuff as well as more modest equipment.

Yeah this is pretty incredible stuff.

Yeah, it would be a nice way to alter the look rendition of an existing lens without having to wait for a new Lens Line that did the same thing to be released.

I am not that knowledgable about this kind of thing. But surely there are many other ways to 'detune' pretty much any lens? Obviously I haven't looked into this that deeply.

Re-tuning lenses is real not hard ‘sometimes’ but it is a hit and miss thing. I have spent a bit of time with very good lens techs doing just that. Companies like masterbuilt do just this for you but the potential down side is take a really long time to stress test then retweak and you can,t just undo on set if you need something clean for some reason..

Some are easy for users to do, such as adding front filters. (I’m not aware of one that has these specific bokeh effects.) You can also smear Vaseline on the front element, run fishing line in front of it, or pull a stocking tight behind the lens for less calibrated, more DIY effects.

Opening up a lens and making effective and controlled tuning changes requires more time, much more skill, and sometimes specialized tools. It also isn’t usually something one can easily do on set, calibrating shot by shot.
