  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Arri DR Test...

DRX

DRX

I was saying before that if the software allowed for white balance with a pink filter you could improve the S/N ratio.

But you can go the other way, if you shoot through a light greenish filter and re-do the white balance and the use DRX you can get two or three stops more highlight detail.

Canon seems to "flat top" the chroma without too much damage and they seem to be doing their version of DRX, so with enough low pass on the chroma to make up for the extra red and blue noise, and working the DRX harder you should be able to get in effect two more stops by using a greenish filter and re-doing the white clip points.

The odd thing about using a pink filter to bring the red/blue white clip in line with the green white clip is that you loose the advantage of DRX, so while the S/N goes up the dynamic range goes down.

Kodak sensors like the one used in the Acam dII seem to have a wider green bias than some of the other brands of sensor I have looked at the true RAW data from, so maybe Kodak thinks people will use DRX like highlight recovery all the time?

Target spec for Monstro is 2 stops more DR than M-X.

Jim

Is that posable with the same chip, similar firmware and and only a better processor?

I hope it is. I have had had mixed faith and doubts about Red's early claims (3yrs ago), and Red has ALWAYS hit the mark. Do it again Boyz!

Prost,
Rich

15.5? Yeah baby!!! YEAH!!! :sifone:

Jim, a few questions if you may. Does 13.5 come from a 2k down-conversion? Are you still pushing ahead on M-X? Think you can get an other hair out of it?

Monstro is a completely new chip and pixel design and the epic asic is already processing in 16bit to take advantage of Monstro's full latitude.

Processed at full resolution. In theory, downscaling should be able to eek out a bit more.

Well this sounds nice. But what does "a completely new pixel design" mean?

Ahh, thanks for the tune-up! my mistake.

And I was happy with mX. Bring on the Monstro!

But still no plans to make a S35 sized Monstro sensor ?

Or is it that you consider that the resolution would be too low on a S35 chip, given that the pixels are bigger than the ones on a MX sensor ?

Going through MX footage now from a music video shoot 12 hours ago.. Amazing results.. The new DR is unbelievable...
