  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI ALEXA LF - 4k, FullFrame announced

The book of face.

I can assure you that the LF has done nothing to the new or used sales price of an Alexa Mini. Used packages are still going for $45-$55K depending on the accessories.

In fact AbelCine have seen even more demand for new Alexa Minis now that customers know a replacement isn't coming anytime soon.

One can make a number of different arguments for Mini demand. Given that a lot of TV was being made with Mini's that will now be made with the LF, suggest the demand for Mini's and XT's will go down. Add the new Sony Venice, Red Monstro and the other cameras coming that Phil has hinted about..... suggest there very well could be and should be less need for Mini's. But Market forces are hard to predict sometimes. Its also interesting how quickly the SXT's value has dropped, lots of those for sale at almost half what they sold for and they are barely a year old. More K's is a real trend.

The Mini is the perfect matching camera for aerial/gimbal shots alongside the LF, even for 4K mandated shows (as they usually allow a certain percentage to still come from other non-4K approved cameras).

I believe Netflix will take occasional scaled-up shots from 2K or 3K provided it's just a brief establishing shot or a second unit B-camera on a car chase or something. Just not the principal camera. And it has to be approved.

What is the best upscale algoritm (Lanczos3 or 4, Spline 16,36 or 64, Sinc,...)

Misha,

In Redcine-X Pro, you can test out most of those with your footage in the "Export" menu in the "Options" Tabs under the "Software Scaling" Drop down menu.

I don’t think most TV shows are switching from Mini’s to LF — most shows don’t have the Netflix mandate of shooting with a 4K camera. I’m starting another season of an Amazon show and we’re shooting 3.2K on Mini’s just like last season.

Thanks Rand,

Looking at your pictures Sinc is the sharpest(why upscale otherwise???).

That was our conclussion to (2 out of 3 persons) with CinemaDNG RAW 4,6k (1 GB/s 60 fps) downscaled to UHD, FHD and up again to UHD.
All viewed on a LG C7 55" Oled, I was the 3th. person and couldn't really see the difference between Sinc and Spline64, maybe I need glasses.

Will do a test with Open Gate 3.4K: 3424 x 2202 (cropped 3424 x 1926) and then to UHD and see if any of us can see the difference.

We don't use RedCine-X, Red's are a bit above budget for us (but who knows what the future will bring).

Misha,

I think you would notice a difference in certain scene scenarios where one scaling type might be more advantageous than another. You may also want an image with "Smoother" less sharp edges say for example a close-up shot of your actors verses a wide establishing landscape shot.

Sure Rand,

I would do that in post before upscaling.
The only thing we upscale is SD to FHD (and it's still crap quality).

Agreed, I was just meaning for those few which are forced to shoot in 4K that now they have the option to use an Arri Alexa LF together with the Mini on the few shots where smaller size is required.

First Alexa LF and now the movie "Face 2 Face" that is entirely shot on GoPro will be on Netflix. Has Netflix gone soft on the requirements?

There is a large difference between the standards that Netflix issues for "produced by Netflix titles" and projects they purchase to stream.

Face 2 Face was/is an indi film whose distribution rights were purchased by Netflix.

It's a bit of work but A.I. Gigapixel gives amazing results.
PAL 576 i50 -> 576 p25 -> jpeg with SMPlayer -> A.I. Gigapixel to 1080(Height)->jpeg to movie with myFFmpeg.
