ARRI ALEXA SYSTEM REFRESHED WITH NEW XT MODELS

from the press release:
(20th February 2013, Munich) – With the ALEXA XT cameras (Xtended Technology) ARRI is refreshing its ALEXA product line, incorporating new features inspired by feedback from professional users. The ALEXA XT, ALEXA XT M, ALEXA XT Plus and ALEXA XT Studio cameras will replace all previous models except for the original ALEXA. Owners of existing ALEXA cameras will be able to purchase individual upgrades that deliver most of the features of the XT configuration.

Thank you RED for changing the game - its a good thing they do a upgrade path.

They also have built in, behind the lens, IRND now.

Has Arri ever offered hardware upgrades like this before? RED really has changed things.

Still no 4k though. I wonder how long that will take.

Nope, we have 80% of all Arri cameras ever made, this is the first upgrade they have ever done.

The internal ND option is a very clever move. Saves time and reduces the chance of scratches allot!

Less weight and easier working with internal NDs
The In-camera Filter Module IFM-1 allows ALEXA XT models to be rated at the base sensitivity of EI 800 without the need for external Neutral Density (ND) filters, even in bright sunlight. Filtering behind the lens rather than in front saves time and reduces weight, reflections and operational complexity. The Precision IRND filters used with the IFM-1 are based on innovative technologies that assure highest image quality and perfect color balance at all of the eight available densities, from ND 0.3 to ND 2.4.

My guess, Arri will have to get in line behind sony to pick up their lawsuit and then negotiate with Jim to get a license to do onboard raw recording above 2k...

You have to give it to RED and Jim, as kick Starting the digital film revolution was not a dumb move to make. Patent the shit out of it while you do it... well, that's priceless.

I'm pretty sure (as Jim been quite very successful with patents for oakley) that he will actually bring it all home. So even though he right now have a lot of money I think he very soon will be able to refer to today as "before he got rich"....

I got this email early on. Glad I didn't invest in the Gemini Recorder with the ARRI Raw license.

Somewhere in a shadowy darkened room, sitting in front of a huge 30-inch Apple display, Jim Jannard is lighting a cigar and uttering the words "Let's dance."

According to this thread it's not compressed. Just bayer pattern image data. Interesting to see them talking about RED's patent in a 2 year old thread.

Uh. The internets. Them you are talking about would be me, I guess...

EDIT: Just read the whole thread again. Interesting to see how people dodged the bandwidth/storage issue with uncompressed 4/5K RAW I tried to bring up.

The XR module will be a paid upgrade. And you'll need to purchase 512GB XR Capture Drives. Plus you'll need a Codex/Arri transfer station. Neither of these will be cheap. I think when you add it up the Gemini will still be the least expensive option. No word yet on 120fps ARRIRAW externally. For now it seems it may be 120fps internally to the XR drives only.

In a case that RED get fixed MX IQ issues with the new Dragon upgrade in terms of what the most of cinematographers want to have from one camera,

then also increase DR to 18 stops, get higher up ISO performance that altogether with new Meizler module and 300 fps @ 2K it can be still more attractive camera system than new Arri.

Hope that RED can achieve all those goals till NAB, also maybe even can win a kind of Sumo wrestling patent fight suit against Sony on the court and finally win that 2013 digital camera race...!!!???

It appears the Capture drive will allow you to download via USB 3.0 or directly to an SAS card on a MAC Pro. Don't see a need for a Codex/Arri transfer station.

You'll either need the Codex Capture Drive Transfer Station that works over SAS to a Mac Pro or the Codex Capture Drive Dock that works over USB 3.0. The XR Capture Drives are proprietary just like RedMags so you will need some sort of card reader.

These features are nice as well.
The cameras will all be equipped with LDS contacts at 12 and 3 o’clock positions in the PL lens mount. The mount itself is lighter.
A new cooling fan runs even quieter than the current one. There’s a new VMB-3 viewfinder bracket that is more stable and uses two 15 mm rods as part of the design. These are in the same position as the lightweight rods, just above the lens instead of below, and ideal for attaching lens motors and other accessories.

That was a very prescient point you brought up back then.

Uncompressed up to 120fps. That's 11 min. on one 512GB

Approximately how much uncompressed ARRIRAW 4k footage could you fit on one of their 512gb drives? Not that it's an option, but if it was...
