Has anyone used the Arri 8R Ultra Prime on an Epic shooting at 5K / full frame ?
Does it cover the whole sensor?

Also, I'm just generally curious of the overall performance of this lens... what's the distortion and sharpness like?
Any thoughts / experiences would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

Michael

PS - here's a link to the lens.

I wish I could find some hi-rez footage online (everything I've seen so far is super low quality.)

I haven't had a chance to use it on my EPICs yet, but I would be very surprised if it didn't work. EDIT: Many other focal lengths in the Ultra Prime category have been used on the EPIC and they all cover with no issues.

As for the performance... It's pretty amazing.

We shot this short for the 2010 Atlanta 48 hr FF. All wide shots are R1 #0043 (non MXed at the time) with the 8R. We were able to get into some pretty tight spaces and still get the shot.

The 8R is easily my favorite lens.

Joe,

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed your short.
I'm looking forward to using this lens.

The lens portholes wide open on 35mm film, it will be worse on Epic at 5K, stopped down it will probably cover OK.

Hi Stephen ,

Can you put some sample still images shot in 8R in 5K on Epic as we are planning to buy one?It will be very helpful.

Our 10mm Ultraprime works fine with EPIC at 5K.

Thanks

Harcharan

Here is a shot I tucked in Dubai during New Year's Eve... On the 8R 5K.

See before and after a little work from my friend Jac Mulder of MudVille in Dubai.

Hi Harcharan,

I have only used it on film, the portholing on Ketch's shot is about what I remember. It's more obvious with lighter background. The lack of distortion is out of this world!

Best,

Stephen

Anyone shot with this lens @5K and posted the video results? I understand it vignettes until under 4K. Tru?

yeah, i seem to recall that it worked just fine. love that lens!!

We got this one from Arri CSS. Yes, at FF 5K it does look like a bit of vignetting in the upper right corner. I have never posted any of that footage. It was simply handed off to the production.

We shoot with it, when we made some panoramic images. the lens is amazing and just a little bit of computing talent you can make the lens perfectly rectilinear in post. Or stitch some super nice 4X to 360 panoramas.

Those where made in HDRx... technically better moving panoramas are hard to make.
