I think this has been thoroughly examined by a whole generation of individuals before us. The "flicker" is akin to sitting around staring at a fire... 24fps is perhaps the most comfortable intersection between persistence of vision and gestalt.
And gestalt theory has always been my go-to explanation for why we do just about anything "nonproductive" our brains love games, music, visual stimuli because it's satisfying to put 2 + 2 together. Seeing fewer images per second, but allowing our brain to fill in the rest, is probably more satisfying for this reason - we're synthesizing the images in our minds more so they resonate more.
