So Zak Snyder's film finally came out. It might be better to give Black Magic the camera credit on this one and Photoshop out any Reds in the BTS pics.

I was surprised by the look of the movie, it was definitely an always wide open F1.4 lens looking movie for sure, very unusual for such a high budget film, but I was surprised to find out what they actually used! It seems Zack Snyder used an adapted Canon 50mm 0.95 "Dream Lens" and the old Canon 35mm 1.5 LTM rangefinder lens (if the article I read was accurate) and it looks like they filmed primarily with the 50mm 0.95. Now, I don't think the whole movie was done at 0.95, it was maybe at 1.4 or some half-stop between 0.95 and 1.4, could be wrong though, but I can tell in the planning scene in the warehouse, that shot where Tig Notaro was fiddling with the scale model of the casino, that was most certainly a 0.95 shot for how blurry and pinpoint focused it was on her hand.

I always wondered about what a movie would look like at 0.95 with the Canon "Dream Lens" but after trying out my Nikon 50mm 1.2 in film school, I could tell that it wouldn't be very practical as I had enough focus issues at F1.2 with my short film, "The Christmas Valentine", which is on my Youtube page under Babs Do Productions. Still, you have to hand it to them for going the distance with their cinematography, overlooking technical imperfections by modern standards, and embracing full blown lens character for at least one movie like this.

I loved the cinematography. If nothing else, it looks like no other big budget Hollywood film. And that focus puller must have been having heart attacks on a daily basis.

The movie itself is... well, I'll keep my mouth shut.

As I see it they could have closed down at least a stop and a half and it would get the same look / feel but only better.

And yes, the movie itself is of fascinatingly low standard. To me it's amazing that it's actually possible to create something that big with so many people involved and so much effort put in to roll on a script, storyline, dialoge etc that's on such low level. It's like 10 year old kids where in charge, but I guess that's the idea.

I love the attempt to do something never done before. Based on my pCAM Pro, I would estimate most of the movie was shot with 1 to 4 inch DOF, pretty ambitious for an ACTION movie. Wow.

I thought some of the shots were gorgeous artwork and many were a blurry mess. I liked the heist story, but I don't like zombies. So I have mixed feelings about the movie, but its interesting.

it is not my kind off film but the oddness of romantic DoF and the horror kind of worked for me .. def added to the claustrophobic quailty!

Big respect for trying something different but this did not work, the shallow DOF was unwatchable, it looked really bad and amateur, couldn't watch long enough to judge the story.

Funny how so called filmmakers want to "shat" on Snyder for what they believe is disastrous over used bokeh but this monster of a film is on its way to being one of the most watched films in Netflix's history.

One of the indicators of a great film product is how it is received by the masses. I'll just leave it at that...

Everyone I know loved the film. Countless news articles on the success and story lines. Sequel and anime series green lit from the opening response from the public.. But yea.. Most likely a marketing sham

Why would it be faked? It's exactly the type of movie that draws a large audience. Even though the first Justice League was shit, it still draws a crowd. I don't have any doubt this movie brings in millions of views.
