  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are IRND needed with Gemini sensor?

I'm reading that there's a green cast with IRND filters on Helium. True? I have a set of Firecrest IRND filters I was using with both Epic Dragon and Epic-W Helium. Wondering if I need to get a set of regular NDs.

No, you don’t necessarily need ones on Gemini or Helium. But, if you already own ones, you don’t really need to buy others. Just tint-correct them, or just use the color chart for best WB.

I’d recommend using color chart every time possible. It will improve your color consistency vastly.

Your Firecrest's should be fine on Gemini and they aren't the older dye based tinted junk. They are on my approved list and work great.

I did buy them off your reco from a while back!

That said, a DP I worked with was really hesitant to put on the IRNDs and spoke of their issues on Helium. I didn't know much about it at the time, but what is the exact point I can make to someone like that to reassure them?

a) that they just need to make a simple correction in post
b) some specific technical way the Firecrest NDs work that make this a non-issue with them -- if so, what exactly is the science?

Forewarned is forearmed...

Thanks,
Nikhil

Simply shoot a test footage of 2-3 filter examples (if you don't have ones, go to a rental and shoot on place to save money, or find someone with different ones in your area). Will def. work.

Also, there are some videos on youtube, where some filters are tested for IRND pollution, and some videos on neutrality. You can check those if you don't have time to test yourself.

I wish I had that kind of time!! Even if I did, I'd put it into my writing. Just looking for an authority opinion that a respected DP would be able to buy into, or if I can't, it's just more efficient for me to dump the Firecrest IRNDs and get neutral ones for the EPIC-W. Sounds like there's hope I wouldn't have to do that, and I think with a bit of research, if I understand the science behind the firecrest ND filters, I can present a cogent argument to a DP. Atleast, that's the hope.

(sorry, hope I'm not derailing this thread)
