  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

April shipping update

That is a pretty reasonable statement... If these cameras were easy to make, the Apertus AXIOM Beta would be everywhere right now, and Black Magic wouldn't have been ten months off in their estimates...

Jarred - of all people you know I understand how hard is to make stuff - especially the stuff you guys are making. I understand the fluctuations and all other issues. What really makes it frustrating for us is not knowing. Not even a rough dates for worst case scenario. And when we do get some info - like Brent's heads-up on major boost to Ravens production from last Monday - we don't see any follow up in terms of allocations. Nothing has changed on the Raven list for a while now - despite that boost. And again - just be clear - I am not saying nothing is happening - it is just that we don't see it. What would be really great is even some rough info as to how many Ravens have actually shipped in March and the first half of April. That would give us some idea and also quench the thirst for some info. What you guys are (and have been) doing is truly incredible and - at least on my part - much appreciated. But that is also what makes us so anxious about getting these babies into our hands. I'm for example testing some incredible new gear from our mutual friends that is just waiting for the Raven. Raven was made almost specifically for it. I apologize if my use of English is coming (yet again) across as negative or God forbid accusing / insulting. We have been through this in the past and you know the kind of person I am once you get to know me in person...

Anyone else really freaking out about the new "shipping fall 2016" on the preorder page?

I put my pre-order in at the end of Feb, and was hoping I'd see the camera maybe in May. Now totally concerned it will be July, August or even September....

That's for new orders. If you already have an order in, it should be sooner. An end of Feb order is still a bit later than many others, though. I have a preorder from announcement (Dec 10), I think within the first two hours or so, and I have yet to be allocated.

Jarred, it‘s toooooo slowwwww, 1/2016 (Raven - / o)
Until now, I don't know when to get the raven,no one told me to wait until what time.
2/2016? 3/2016? 4/2016? 5/2016?..... or Christmas ?2017? haha,ok, you win!

Peter, we know far more than we would with any other camera company on the planet. Let's be thankful for that and try to be patient while they get things rolling with these amazing new cameras.

FWIW, I have no interest in chocolate covered mushrooms if anybody is making them.....

Don't wanna sound cheesy but I am a film student from Germany and a while back I started a tiny video production company. As for now I got surprisingly busy and I am happy about it. I can make a living, pay for Uni and my movies that I have to make every semester (everything shot on Blackmagic). A big dream was to own a Red camera but it was so unaffordable. Sometimes I rented one just to get in touch with the cameras, get to know the system and play around. I loved it. When the Raven was announced I finally put all my money into it. So now I am waiting for the camera like everyone else here (time stamp December 12th). I preordered pretty late because I had to make sure to get all the money together.

Logically I know that Jarred and Jim are giving us all informations he has and that Red is putting all effort into quality control and fast processing. I really appreciate this and this is not to be taken for granted! But emotionally I am on pins and needles. All my money is gone (or let's say my bank account is practically frozen just for the Red) and I still don't know wether I will get the camera next month or summer or at the end of the year. So I can also feel for other costumers in line who are getting nervous and express their feelings in this community. Like Daniel from Karate Kid. Wax on wax off all day not knowing when to actually get into the ring.
I also wanted to shoot my graduation movie on the Raven so we are postponing the production constantly which makes it more and more expensive. I have to pay the whole movie with my private money. The production takes place in South-Korea and it's really hard to plan and schedule it with the Raven in mind. Irrational to stick to the camera? Maybe, but I want a Red system and due to some complicated calculations, from this point on it is still the best and cheapest plan to wait for the Raven. As I said: I want the graduation movie being shot on a Red system and also it's a good feeling to shoot the movie with gear I own.

Anyway, I know about Red's effort and I am very thankful for the constant updates and news. I will patiently wait as long as it takes, but on a psychological level I constantly have to try not to be distracted by my first huge investment, the money, the gear that I still don't have. Also the anticipation to finally own a Red system. I am glad that I shared this with you even though it has no valuable informations for you guys.
Thanks for reading and have a great sunday :)

Christian, as part of the New Wave at RED, you are being initiated into the RED ecosystem much the same as those of us who have been here from the early days. That is, you are buying a camera that is so desirable that there is a waiting period while they build it.

It doesn't get any better... those of us who have been here for a while have to wait just like you. '-)

Waiting for our Raven, first RED camera and are very excited. If we need to wait just a little while longer to get a quality product, so be it. That's a whole lot better than receiving the camera a few weeks earlier and having to return it for a manufacturing defect! Love chocolate and like mushrooms, but really?!? 😜

I'm anxious for news, but I'm waiting patiently. I know you guys have it under control. Obviously it takes a bit to get production going, and eventually you get it sorted (like Scarlet-W) and it gets going. Thanks Brent and Jarred for your hard work and transparency!

I think it's been said at least 1 million times here. Don't plan on production with a camera you don't have.

I had three shoots in March which I thought I'd have the Scarlet-W for, but I did not so I shot with my FS7. I told the production there's a 50% chance I could have the Red, but when it didn't arrive I was a bit embarrassed and probably should not have mentioned gear that I did not have.

Guess what? The footage from the FS7 looked really great so nobody cared what camera was used in the end. While Red makes very nice cameras, these days cameras are so good it's a much smaller part of the equation. The biggest part of the equation is your talent. If you can't make your project look good on an older Red, Sony, Black Magic (if it's working) or Canon, it's probably more with you than the camera. The latest Red might give you a slight edge, but yeah... most cameras should get you there and it's really up to you.

So make a backup plan with another camera to avoid embarrassment; and if you get the Raven, then you're extra happy. If not, and the project does not come out well, the Raven would not have saved it.

Forecasting cameras is extremely difficult and Jarred and Brent very understandably don't want to get into a pickle which is probably really easy to do with a package especially since there are so many components. They might have all the bodies, but are missing the LCD so nothing can go out; then Red has to wait like the rest of us. Brent did say Fall 2016 for newer orders, so probably expect it then if you did not order early.

My advise is trust in your abilities as a DP and artist; don't believe that just because Red makes a nice camera, it's going to somehow magically make your production look like a blockbuster because it won't.

I shortened your post to save space but the whole thing was spot on. I've had to move forward with projects while waiting for a camera on order. It's a bummer, but the best thing you can do for yourself (and your career) is to make things NOW with what you have NOW. Everything is experience and learning. The cameras you have access to will not make or break your work. Your ability will. Just keep shooting!

To satisfy my curiosity, did you switch from Raven (Pre-December 10th) to Scarlet-W? What was your time stamp?
