  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

April shipping update

And so they are still honoring switching over and keeping the time stamp? So the tons of people jumping over in the last eight hours means my preorder gets pushed even further back? Wtf, this is like the opposite of the reason why I wanted to switch to RED.

Thanks for the update and detailed info. Very cool, an so unusual these days!

What are rough shipping estimates for Raven I/Os preordered before Scarlet? Say 11/20/15, hypothetically :) 4/8/16?
i think we are hoping they at least get through the first day or two before NAB, ordered 9/24-25…anything after that who knows...

Already covered that with my last update. The next Batch of 8k sensors comes out of the oven next week which is still on track from my last March update. They take 2 weeks to go through the QC process so actual 8k cameras should roll out right around NAB time. Impossible to know how many.. as the 8k are the cream of the crop and very few come out alive. Could be 100 sensors, could be 1 sensor.

My best advice is don't plan your shoots around the 8K... they come in slowly, they go out slowly and are far and few in between. They are one little tiny notch on the dial before the impossible mark.

If there were not so many 8ks out shooting some really big things right now in Atlanta and Japan and London you could almost bet against them even existing.. Straddling the land of Unicorns and Mermaids. And along that vain of unbelievable things.. they are just as extraordinary.

Thanks for the update. We get nervous when we are not included but I think everyone just breathed a sign of relief that last months update still holds true. We're grateful that you guys are attempting the future now. We know where we stand, and we know there is no certainty on yields.

Jarred my film is for IMAX, I think it goes without saying I need to plan around 8k. Need every bit of vertical resolution we can get. Using the current batch cameras is like Arri say 2.6k is good enough for 4k. I want to show all those all those F65 users and 15/70 what 8k Weapon can do on 8K Digital Dome. At our recent conference a few weeks back they were still running epic tests for Tomorrow Land.

Hey any idea when non forged 8ks will allocate? Or even an idea where I'm at on the list? thx

It's tough to keep things square, but RED has a pattern and history of somehow always rewarding the person who put jumped in the earliest. Case in point: if RED for some insane reason decides to release a FOURTH kind of DSMC 2 offering (Epic-W) then anyone who had a Scarlet-W deposit will instantaneously be ahead of someone who just walked in off the NAB floor and preordered that night. But then Raven preorders before December would even be before that.

There's no easy way to set the queue but RED has always scratched the back of the ones who took the leap of faith first.

yeah if you are moving.. better do so quickly.

The irony is that when I preordered the Raven, there was NO FREAKING WAY I could afford it at the time, and I challenged myself to make the income between then and now to make it happen (using the Scarlet-X!) Regardless, I threw down the grand just to make sure I got in line. I'm very fortunate to have gotten a killer full time gig that blew away my goal. I could plop down a briefcase of cash and order a Carbon Weapon right now but there's something alluring about the value/price/performance factor of the Raven that makes me wanna take delivery of it :)

You know, the more I think about it, the more I am drawn to RAVEN rather than W. Both are incredible cameras for sure but the value proposition of RAVEN is INSANE. You know, I'm okay with waiting for RAVEN. While yes, I could switch to W and get it sooner than later, I think I'd still want a RAVEN because its just a more attractive package for what I want to do. Plus, when the price goes up, I'll feel even more special ;)

Well I may be splitting hairs here, but historically everything RED has offered was based on RED *ownership* (upgrades, credits, etc. for existing owners). Not based on a refundable $500 deposit on an unreleased camera.

If RED happened to announce an Epic-W, I'd hope the special treatment would be for current Scarlet-D/Epic-D owners, not for people like me (or Raven pre-orders) that haven't actually invested any substantial amount of money in RED.

I don't think preordering the Raven was a "leap of faith". If anything, it's a camera trying to cater to the DSLR/BlackMagic-priced crowd. Now, don't get me wrong, I bet a ton of Dragon owners placed preorders to have an extra camera that will match their A cam. That makes perfect sense. But to an owner/op like me who needs an interchangeable lens mount, larger sensor, etc, it just wasn't a good enough camera. The Weapon is obviously everything I'd want, but I just don't think I could justify investing that much money. Meanwhile, Jarred had mentioned plans for a Scarlet replacement, so I figured I'd wait for that. I don't think my decision to wait for a new Scarlet, which I knew would be a more significant investment than the Raven, should be viewed as "not taking a leap of faith." If anything, I was anticipating a larger RED purchase.

What rubs me the wrong way is that if there is really no cut off date for people switching over, that means the rest of the month and the weeks before NAB could all include even more people sliding ahead of myself and many others who waited for this camera to be announced. I've never been a part of a preorder queue that has me constantly slipping further back in line.

Super super super cool! I'm doing my DI at 8k, having to stitch 6k now, can't wait till I get 8k ... will hugely speed up my workflow. Also ... that's just an insane amount of accesories. I also btw got one of the sleep watches, I was very interested on the REM cycle and fortunetly my REM cycles were real good. My next huge thing is hooking up my camera in the mourning and using the RED sensor as a diagnostic system.

my back is itchy.
for me i will never be buying an A camera for my tv shows and commercials, it doesnt make sense since it switches from alexa to phantom, to red almost weekly. id have to own every camera and every lens choice. so the raven is perfect for me to have a b camera or something personal i can do favors with, which before this was a pocket camera or 5d, both sold and waiting to be replaced. as well, i dont want to invest in PL lenses, because that changes every job too. ive owned whole sets of primes and they made me more selling them than using them, as well, as the dp, as soon as the production needs to make a cut its usually in equipment and its hard to say no i want my lens money!
so yeah, the raven is perfect for some and not enough for others, but my range of projects are huge.

You mean the ones who bought a scarlet-X in 2011, paid 10000$ for the dragon upgrade last year, waited patiently the announcement of the scarlet-W and paid immediately 1000$ to be sure to be the first in line?

Haha, EXACTLY! I'm not in that group, but how has ALL the focus been on Raven-switchers (again, could have been as little as $500 refundable. literally no skin in the game) and Scarlet-D upgraders are mentioned virtually nowhere? That's what I meant when I was saying that all of this sort of flies in the face of why I wanted to switch to RED. I'm seeing preorder customers get preferential treatment on what is essentially an up-sell over people who have put tens of thousands of dollars into owning a Scarlet-D.

except the fact of some of us that were expecting ravens around march 17th have bought media, batteries, lenses, etc specifically for this camera. i have a bunch of things at the red store in hollywood just sitting there and i said ill pay for it, but im not picking it up until my camera is being picked up at the same time. so just a little skin, but i know exactly what you are saying.

Shipping did start when we said it would. Starting ship date doesn't mean everyone that ordered their camera gets them all that same day... that only happens with software and things that nobody wants.

Jarred,

LMAO. You are too funny. We love what you guys do, and we love that you guys love what we do with the awesome gear you invent for us. I think it's phenomenal that the rollout of these cameras has been this smooth. Plus, the transparency between updates is unbelievable! I'm not kicking myself for not booking NAB. I still can... I guess ;).

haha, yes i know, this being my first go around with purchasing i guess in my mind i thought we'd get through at least the first day of orders, seems like many more scarlets went out the first day then raven on its first day, but who knows, there could of been 100s sent out to people not on reduser and dealers and such. as far as we knew pkgs were ready to go, everything on track!
pkgs were supposed to ship in march last i understood, now it seems like april 8th at earliest.

Jordan,

He did say that a few dozen would be going out the first few allocations. ;) Production will ramp up in April for RAVEN, and by this time next month it should be full steam ahead! (Hopefully W will be taken care of by then and the focus will be all on RAVEN.)
