  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple TV 4K

HDMI?

Seems to be the answer. Also Optical audio out of the Apple TV.

(snip) Best 4K BluRay players our there are from OPPO. Hands down way better than what Sony and LG are offering. If you’re not looking for a game system, but want a 4K BluRay player that supports HDR, Dolby, etc.. and will play 4K and HD media of your own, it may just fit the bill. The UDP-203 is the main one and then they also offer a bigger unit with a ton more options for audiophiles. http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-203/

Assuming that you are going the UHD BluRay disc route in search of higher picture quality, why would you want a cheap player? I have the OPPO 203 and highly recommend it. One of many things I like about it; the output signal is strong enough to push UHD through HDMI cables that fail on other UHD sources (DirecTV Genie, I'm looking at you).

BTW, many HDMI cables that claim to be UHD/4K capable are, in fact, not. They aren't cheap, but I strongly recommend fiber optic HDMI cables for anything over 2 meters.

That "Dolby Vision" support is meaningless. How does a pass through device even matter when it comes to rendering the Rec2020 color space? That depends on the encode of the content and the TV.

The player in this situation is not a pass through device, it is the decoder and the primary video and audio processor in the system. If the player does not support HDR10, Dolby Vision, or other extensions of the 4K BluRay system, then you don’t get them. If your TV doesn’t support HDR10, you don’t get the wider color gamut. If your TV supports it and your player supports it and you run your player through an AV receiver that does not support it, you don’t get it on the TV.

As for Dolby Vision here, it’s their specific image processing algorithm that is licensed. I don’t know if it’s really that great compared to other alternatives or not. I was just pointing out that the player offers it.

Andree is right on this one. HDMI does not just pass through on most devices. They need to understand the data packaging and communication protocol, need to support the appropriate version of HDCP [copy protection]. The supported version of HDMI, resolution, features and extensions passed from one end to the chain to the other is only as complete or fully featured as the least advanced device in the chain. You can’t plug a 4K TV and 4K BluRay player into a HD receiver and watch your movie in 4K.

New Apple TV does not have a separate audio output. A real pain for those using external audio processing. Only ports on it are power, one HDMI port and one Ethernet port.

Thanks for the info. Of course they would add 4K and remove something like optical audio not fully understanding that this device is the "portal" for people who have wav files served to the Apple TV via their iTunes library. Anyway, its seems that for serious viewing or listening there need to be another solution.

I sorta want my vinyl and CDs back anyway. Convenience comes with a price and it is usually quality.

Optical audio wouldn't resolve any of the things you are concerned about. There are plenty of modern AV receivers that fully support 4k HDR HDMI passthrough.

Apple TV will serve up content from a lot more than iTunes media libraries. And also do it in 4k HDR..
 
It has been revealed that the new ATV does not output 24fps, so don't pin your hopes and dreams on it being your streaming saviour and go-to content player.

Had a good laugh at that. Despite whatever that "support person" said I can tell you factually this is not true. It supports 2160p at up to 60fps. Specifically, if I recall correctly: 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60fps.
 
Like Phil said, AppleTV plays back 24fps just fine. Not sure who supposedly revealed what...

Not only that, but Netflix, HBO and other apps can provide content in 24, 25, 30 and 60 FPS, 3D, HDR.. etc.

Now 4K BluRay still has the potential for better picture and superior audio... Streaming content from Apple and others have always suffered in the audio department.

The very sparse information on the Apple support site pages for the new model reference only 4K/1080P output at 60/30 for US and 50/25 for Europe. Older ATVs don't have 24 either, so I suppose it's not surprising that the new one wouldn't.

FWIW, 24fps is accessible in the SDK, but it leads me to wonder if Apple is really going to support it then or always lock the output mode at 25/50 or 30/60 options, even if apps set a 24fps frame rate or content dictates and all display hardware supports it. Nearly all movies on iTunes are mastered/encoded in 24fps...

You can code your app at 24fps or whatever other frame rate you desire, but it always gets converted to whatever the selected output is. That's why you have to carefully select something appropriate or you get horrid problems with the final product. That's been the case since the first ATV and it's how it works with this one, according to the latest dev documentation that I have in front of me. Apple may enable 24fps output if app devs want it and make a case for it, but it's not something that is arguably relevant beyond video playback, so they probably don't get many requests for it.
 
60p 10bit UHD will have a hard time going over HDMI2.0x
 
Dolby is a superset or HDR10. Same PQ curve, but full 12-Bit support and and a defined tone and gamut mapping algorithm used across all DV devices, not some half baked solution from the display manufacturer. Also frame accurate metadata unlike HDR10+.

What puzzles me is that based on currently available info, the new AppleTV only supports 30, 50 and 60 Hz for Dolby Vision modes and yet it seems the DV specification requires those rates plus 24 and 25 as well. Looks like I’m not the only one questioning this.

AppleTV can be run at 24Hz in a few UHD modes, including HDR10. Apparently the movie playback works great that way, but the rest of the interface chunks along and is very laggy. I guess I can plug one in later today and play with it now that today is the day...

Why the AppleTV can’t simply switch to 24Hz or whatever the appropriate rate is based on the content that’s playing is a puzzle. Although it seems like nearly all the pieces of that puzzle are there and it would just take Apple flipping a switch in tvOS to make it happen. Hard to understand that Atmos is on the roadmap, but 24fps movie playback is not...
