  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

You guys seem to be confusing this with a computer. It's not.

I can't wait to get one! It will float around the living room for casual browsing, video playback, photos, games and general cool stuff.

At 1.5 pounds it's perfect. At $499 it's a no-brainer. I would take this over a crappy netbook any day of the week!

Everything doesn't need to be a MacBook Pro to be useful.

There is no point trying to sell this thing for $2000, which is exactly what it would cost if they threw in all the crap you're demanding it do, only to then reject it on price.

I think they got it right.

Things I am shocked about:
1. Lacking a camera. I mean, this would have been a deal-maker for me.
2. Lacking that mini-DVI port Apple's been all hot to promote. Especially since it has its own version of Keynote! Running Keynote from this device alone would sell a lot of them to the businessy-types.

But when all's said and done, I'm still excited about this. I still likely won't get one until ver2 or after I own a Scarlet, whichever comes first. I think it's a great product, it just has so much potential for more, that it is a little disappointing.

I'm sure the accessories are really where it gets cool. I'm sure people will be thinking of many great things to do with the accessories.

It combines the pointlessness of AppleTV with the uselessness of a MacbookAir.

But seriously, somebody mentioned it would be a flashy way to pass around a demo reel or client video and that is the first good idea I've heard for it.

Anybody see the missing flash lego in Job's keynote web demo? I thought that was hilarious.

Actually - if you look at the stock chart (which I was watching simultaneously as the stream) when that missing flash popped up the stock plummeted and only recovered when the price was announced.

Cons: Missing camera, missing flash is just a joke for something meant to be the ultimate web browsing tool, the name is ridiculous.

Pros: Price, the processor looks promising

I would use it to show my reel on in meetings instead of my iphone and I would use it to write with, maybe even do spreadsheets/budgets.

I guess its main role is for consuming, not for creating.

I.e. for viewing media, but not for creating media. You can't edit with it, but you can display what you have previously edited.

Microsoft Courier... Whatever. I'll be interested once I see more than a concept video.

The iPad is going to be huge on college campuses, and for educational markets in general, especially as the price lowers.

I'm really conflicted over the lack of a camera. It makes perfect sense to have a built-in camera for video chat applications. It makes little to no sense to have a camera for anything else. Apple is already addressing the camera issue and a camera connection kit is one of the announced accessories. I like the sleek case for it that can also prop the iPad up for tabletop viewing/typing.

I think people are being too hard on it here. It definitely fills an interesting gap. I'll be getting one as I'll be developing for it, but I'm excited for its potential as well and would probably get one regardless.

For use on-set or something more close to "our industry", it will be great for dailies viewing as mentioned.

One of these docked in my kitchen with a kickass cookbook app, calendar and email, etc.. would be great.

As for Flash vs. HTML5. I agree that HTML5 will ultimately be superior, but too much of the web currently runs on Flash and will continue to do so for some time. I really don't understand the lack of support on the iPhone and the missing Flash ability we saw in the iPad presentation. I have yet to hear a good reason for no Flash player on the iPhone. It's almost like Apple has specifically told Adobe to not bother with it.

Anyone thinking the iPad won't make a huge impact on various markets is not paying attention. A $499 iPad is already more sophisticated and capable than any touchscreen controller from Crestron, URC, etc.. 7" Crestron control pad is $3200. The home theatre market and home automation markets are going to eat these up. I can think of several others.

A 9.7" ips LED display!! This is awesome, I think its a great gadget I can show the Waveform from 3cP in the palm of my hand, and show the actress stills from the last setup. Show electrical diagrams, watch a brief cut of an xml that was sent from Editorial, connectivity over wifi on set with other workstations, the possibilities are endless. I always create 1/8 res QT's from every piece of media so i know that Post will not have an issue encoding, these file can be dumped in a folder on the device and look amazing on this display. Nearly instantaneous dailies the director can take home with him.

I can think of at least several dozen awesome things I can do with this, I wonder what flash type they used inside SSd or CF card? I want to replace it, same with wifi card. 3-4 of these things on Major Productions is going to kick ass, I can just load the files wherever the director wanders to on set.

dailies is a good one!

If it makes this http://www.jazzmutant.com/ kind of technology available for less, I would look closely at it.

A customizable control surface for any number of software packages, (Logic PT, Live) and all the attendant plug-ins with their custom interfaces and controls. That would be nice. Especially if Apple wrote the apps for Logic and anything with faders where you want to control multiple faders in real time.

Im being very serious, that LED ips display at 9.7" is really sweet. it can be mounted on a Plate on a C-stand and controlled remotely, I just drop stills and dailies onto it during the day. Hopefully once its hacked I can do everything remotely from wifi, It unfortunately has no inputs... But I have wished for a larger display on my iphone several times, for creative purposes not the phone purposes.

Ok Found something I dont like... It has the lock screen, thats super lame.

I think the next version of this will probably be awesome. I'm sure all the complaints about this version - lack of camera, low-res screen, etc - will be addressed. I see huge potential in this, but I think I will wait for the second-gen iteration of iPad.

I see that sentiment echoed across the web today. Hopefully sales aren't so bad that Apple cancels it instead of forging through to a better product

They are very heavily invested at this point and will definitely move forward.

I actually held out on the iPhone until 3Gs, and I'm glad I did! I love this thing. I would probably pay 500 bucks just for the iPod functions plus my pUniverse app that lets me see where the stars are at night as I aim the iPhone at the sky. It's mindblowingly awesome.

I usually try to avoid first generations of products *cough R1*, just because 2nd-gen is always a huge improvement. Thousands or millions of people get their hands on the product and the company gets tons of feedback. That is exactly what's going to happen with iPad.

Compare it to a Kindle, which does one thing and costs 75% as much as the iPad, and then complain.

Doesn't ANYONE get that this is the market they are going for?

Why is everyone trying to turn it into a MBP?

Add a camera, USB, higher res screen, DVI and the rest and you would have a $4,000 monstrosity that no one would ever buy.

What a piece of shit... i've never been so dissapointed on Apple ever (Yes, The Apple Tv looks like fucking rocket lab compared to iPad)

It's a crippled, oversized iPod Touch with a 4:3 screen! Come on Steve, the 90's called. They wan't their aspect ratio back!

iPad (V1) = Epic failure

I bet a Scarlet that iPad (V1) is terminated within 12 months, bet?
