  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple finally responds to FCP X fallout

I like the first part...

"Final Cut Pro X is a breakdown in nonlinear video editing. The application has depressed many pro editors, and it has also generated a lot of discussion in the pro video community. We know people have questions about the few features in Final Cut Pro X and how it compares with previous versions of Final Cut Pro. Here are the answers to the most common questions we’ve heard."

shouldn't it be everything FCP7 is and more right out of the gate? I'm still going with iMovie Pro as a more logical naming convention..

This is a good example of newspeak interpretation...

Big fan of George Orwell?

Apple has changed a lot since 1984…

I dont think its really a satisfactory response. Id like to know which Pro editors are impressed. To me at least it confirm that Apple have completely misunderstood the market and whats needed. One aspect is how Red media is suggested to be handled.

Wow, yes. It's pretty bad. And 1984-esque.

I'm composing my refund request now.

BTW, I am a programmer and could definitely write an XML -> FCP X translator. Might make me some cash. Apple's line on this is such BS. Probably no point though because there are going to be another 10 3rd-party attempts?

Deciding to leave EDL and OMF support to 3rd parties is a really awful move.

Dodging the question about video output is just SLEAZY POLITICIAN STUFF.

I think that Ron Brinkmann (Mr Shake himself and who knows Apple from the inside) said it best.

"...the features that high end customers need are often very very unsexy. They don’t look particularly good in a demo. See, here’s the thing with how features happen at Apple to a great extent – product development is often driven by how well things can be demoed... All the mid-level managers know that they’re going to have a limited window of time to convey what makes a product or a feature special to their bosses. So they either 1) make a sexy demo or 2) spend a lot of time trying to explain why some customer feels that some obscure feature is worth implementing. Guess which strategy works best?"

I just have no desire to contribute towards the salaries of Apple pro apps middle management when they have such a cynical attitude. I do not support them prioritizing dumb stuff that "demos well" over real user needs.

Here's their suggested RED workflow...

Hahaha!

They can't even say "we're working on native R3D support"... years after Adobe and Avid have actually implemented it!

Their method works REALLY well when you decide to re-link clips later and find that that clips don't automatically re-link.

I guess that you're supposed to do a conservative first light in RedCineX then use their stupid "color corrector board" (which is basically color wheels but repackaged in a worse interface) to finish things up?

Resolve 8 will fix this once Apple finally adds XML support. But Apple's current suggestion for RED workflow is awful.

Good for us that no professional editor takes Apple at their word at this point - or RED owners would have a nightmare trying to explain to every post client why Apple's officially-recommended "workflow" is a really bad idea.

On behalf of REDuser I say no thanks, Apple. Go back to 2007, you losers.

Are you all really suprised FCPX doesn't support r3d's out of the gate? Apple needs to release APIs for this, so RED and others can get on with that. All Apple did was say "for now, there's REDCine". It seems people have forgotten that X was touted as 4k ready back at the sneak peek. They always planned RED support. With the right API, it will be FAST with r3ds.

I understand the criticisms of X - really. But to expect them to support your needs at launch seems a little - well - entitled.

Where do they say, "for now"?

If you are working with RED cameras, you can use the free RED software REDCINE-X, designed to transcode RED RAW video to ProRes for use in Final Cut Pro X: https://www.red.com/support/all/downloads.

Some people need parents to make decisions for them...
I for one like to have options in how I do my workflow.

I see what you did there! LOL!

You're right - I should have made it clearer this was my interpretation. Do you think there won't be a plug-in for FCPX in the next few months? Apple need to release a comprehensive set of APIs and SDK, which they have confirmed they will. Support will follow. I don't know what other conclusion to draw.

FCPX will then be the most affordable, native r3d edit program. Scarlet owners especially will love it. Why would RED not support it?
