Apple Event — March 8

[still working my way through the plethora of videos in this thread]

The Marques Brownlee illustrates the GPU score of a single AMD Radeon Pro W6900X MPX module (2021 Q3) in the 2019 Mac Pro is 168k in Geekbench vs 104k for the M1 Ultra - ie 60% faster.

Roughly speaking a fully loaded (2 x MPX) 2019 Mac Pro would be 3.2 x the GPU performance of a M1 Ultra (with an 'Infinity fabric' cable connecting the GPUs). With a Vega Duo matching the M1 Ultra in some of the synthetic test - 4 x M1 Ultras might only be comparable to a fully loaded 2019 Mac pro.

So .. 4 x M2 Extremes might hit the sweet spot. Circa 128 performance CPUs cores is way more than is needed.

+) Would Apple licence AMD's Infinity Fabric v3 (which is coherent but not particularly fast) between its own 'Sleds'?
+) Will Apple adopt an open standard (like PCIe5) so that AMD or Intel can make GPU only sleds?
+) Will Apple risk moving Metal towards an APU (GPU + CPU with unified memory) optimised version?

On another note - it looks like M2 production may be delayed by a quarter. That could mean that any MacPro announcement in June (WWDC) will be a sneak peek with hardware availability in Q4.

How could Apple DO this to their BEST customers?

Just in case anyone isn't keeping up, the Studio Display power cable is indeed removable. There's a small port with a push-button where you can insert a small tool to push the release and detach the cable.... Why did they design it this way? Who knows. It's a questionable design, just like their approach with the stand options. Stands and the VESA mount are interchangeable as well, but you need to take it to an Apple Store or authorized service center to swap the stand if you want to keep your warranty intact. Supposedly the the stand swap is no-charge, other than the cost of your new stand or mount, but that's just inconvenient AF. FWIW, Apple will be offering a longer power cord option for the Studio Display since it has a proprietary end on the monitor side of the cable. They will sell the longer cable separately with the little plastic tool to remove the existing cable. Talk about dumb.

As for the Studio Display itself, it's nice. But like a few of the reviews point out, the lack of HDR / XDR is a bit disappointing. And yet, this is built on LG's latest edition of their 27" 5K panel -- two revisions newer than the panel used in the LG UltraFine 5K monitor which is now discontinued. It is noticeably better than the 5K UltraFiine, mostly brighter and the viewing angles are better. The chassis is definitely nicer and benefits from Apple's build quality. I don't think Apple could translate their 6K XDR display tech to this 27" size and get close to this price point, hence why it's just a new version of the existing 5K display from the UltraFine monitor or the 27" iMac [Pro].

I was able to work with the Studio Display yesterday. It's a great monitor overall. If you want HDR support or 1000 nits or other features available out there, then there are good options from ASUS, Samsung and others, but they all come at 4K resolution or 5K in an ultra-wide form, none of which really present themselves well for retina scaled resolution at 27" the way the 5K panel does. So different monitors for different uses. The new ASUS ProArt 4K is great... But honestly if you can spend the money for one of those, then you may as well suck it up and get the 6K XDR monitor from Apple because it's even better. I have one of these Studio Displays on order (should get it next week) to replace an old 24" 4K that needs to go. And that's fine and great, but I hope the next Apple display purchase I make will have HDR and 120Hz refresh -- which will require updated DisplayPort and Thunderbolt functionality that does not exist yet.

...No Mac Studio for me. I'll reassess my desktop situation once the new Mac Pro drops.
