  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple Event — March 8

So does it playback 8k r3d, and in case it does. Is it one stream or how many streams at full debayer 16bit, and what compression? All reviews I seen yet have been pointless info. I'm sure we know this next week. But perhaps some one here done some testing already.

Joel,

I'm sure when everyone starts to get their machines that someone , Like Max Tech, will give you some indication of the kind of performance you can expect.

Joel,

At the 9:40 minute mark he talks about the performance of 8K( I think it's ProRes Raw) footage with the Mac Studio

2 x M1 Ultra SoC's are barely as fast as 1 x Nvidia 3090.

If Nvidia's 4090 is twice the GPU Performance of the 3090 - would pro's want to lock themselves into an Apple machine with 1 x 'Extreme' M chip when a Windows machine could be upgraded to 2 x Nvidia 4090 GPUs - and a finish a 1 x hour job on a PC took a top of the line Mac Pro 4 x hours?

I wonder therefore if Apple will needs the ability to scale the Mac Pro to more than just a M2 Extreme (composed of 16 x M2 chips).

Here's my Mac Pro 2022 (completely speculative) guess:
+) Will have a new (likely coherent) backplane fabric that allows a max of 4 x Sleds to be installed; Max power of 150 Watts a sled.
+) Each sled will have 'wafer scale' TSMC bonding (ie the next generation up from M1 Ultra); a 4 x 4 array of M2 SoC that have M2-to-M2 interconnects on all sides (a 9TB/sec Mesh interconnect).
+) Each M2 SoC will have 8GB (can't take more area than the M2 above it) of memory on a layer Under the chip; Contacts from M2 to Memory will be Z-axis. Total memory for sled 16 x 8 = 128 GB.
+) $4k / sled. Entry price for Mac Pro $8k.
+) Each sled to have performance of 3090. Max performance of fully loaded machine equivalent to a 96 core x86 with 2 x Nvidia 4090's
+) Guaranteed compatible with M3 version of chip (70% more transistors in the same space = a boat load more GPU cores)

Antony,

Who knows what Apple will release in the Mac Pro. They may have something that the Rumor Mongers have even become aware of yet and will completely surprise everyone.
