  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple destroys MacBook Pro

Forget Linux, It's a dead end platform and doesn't even have a decent video editor.

That's the most unusual statement I've heard in months...

Every major post facility, ILM, Sony Imageworks, DD, Dreamworks, Disney, Pixar, have their entire infrastructure built on Linux.. Then there's TDI and Efilm which are both linux dominant, that's just the ones on the tip of my tongue.

It's the defacto industry platform for the major players. It's just the small timers and basement operators that ignore Linux to their own peril. In fact many of them who I have worked with are actullay on Linux as well. As for finishing tools on Linux, let me think here, Flame, Fire, Smoke, Lustre, all the Iridas tools, Piranha, nearly all Autodesk's software and that's just the ones off the top of my head.

Every major rendering tool is primarily Linux, all the 3d apps that are in use by key players on the post side are predominantly Linux... hmm.. you're right.. we should just all switch to Vista.

Yet these companies cut on final cut pro, avid and on macintoshes.
3d is a different market and the companies you listed are also big enough to employ in house software developers. Pixar for example develops most of it's software in house and with the exception of renderman it's developed entirely for in house use.

And since when have I been an advocate of Windows Vista.

Why would you need a editing apps to run redcineX?

But yes if you want the "do it all" computer, then linux might not be the right choice for you if you need to do editing jobs, but for 3D, compositing, playing it is by far the best platform (image manipulation, yes except for editing, in general is better on linux).

All I want to say is that I think it is clear that open source is the best way for long term dev. EXR wouldn't be what it is if ILM would have kept it for them, everybody wins, like with OFX, etc...
And there is some small facilites that have their pipeline on linux as well not only the big majors.

cheers,
antoine.

I am sorry but reading few a through of these posts just makes me laugh. None of the people complaining are likely using these machines for anything the things that they can no longer do.

If you are and still complaining you need to understand that people with SPECIALIZED and NICHE workflows and needs are the ones that need to make things fit their workflow. It isn't the other way around. I have always enjoyed the fact the things are tailor made for my own needs. It is half of the fun really.

And the complaints are ludicrous. NO eSata!? Oh what will I do now with this computer that I don't even own!? Oh no!

Complaining about things that aren't really a problem for you is a sign of needing something important to do.

Thanks for stopping by Andrew. I think you're missing the point. The 15" MBP has effectively been rendered useless to anyone who needs a moderate level of storage bandwidth. This change happened at a bad time for me as I was in the market. My 15" MBP was hitting the 3-year-old mark. So I bought me a 17". Nice system, love the thing. It's not much bigger than the 15", but I still prefer the 15" for overall size and weight. OTOH the 1920x1200 LED display is frickin beautiful...

No it's not the end of the world, but it's just one of those things where Apple doesn't always understand their own customer base as well was they think they do. And this change was a swift kick to the groin for larger corporate entities and government agencies (taxpayer money there) when they may require the ExpressCard slot, but not need the added size, horsepower or expense that comes with the 17" model. That can really add up if they're buying 100 or more units every year...

Anyone doing any serious RED work or editing on an MBP will find the new 15" models to be very restricted without the EC-34 slot. Just the way it is. A single Firewire bus doesn't cut it sometimes.

Would you mind explaining this sentence? Sorry, my English is not so good.
