I've got a job coming up, the first to DP with the RED. So I downloaded some sample .r3d files to work with and export from RED ALERT, and then color grade in Apple Color. Everything was fine until I got to Apple Color. It cropped the image to what appeared to be 4:3, then when I rendered the files, they were smaller 4:3 cropped images playing in a big black 4k screen.

I won't be editing, but I'd like to hand back the fully graded 2k, 3k, or 4k (whichever we end up shooting) pro-res files. How do I do this properly?

Color limitation is 2K delivery.
If your gonna be working in Color you can see the R3D nativity.
So you might want to do some tests on workflow if you want to take advantage of that power.

Your current Color project setting is probably set to SD, that is the reason why the 4k materials are cropped. As Luis mentioned above, Color is limited up to 2K project at this time, so you have to consider what your delivery format is. Also, 3K footage is not ideal for the "native" Color workflow since Color only processes the R3D 3K footage in the half resolution which will be less than 1080HD resolution (if your deliverable is SD then it's okay). If 3k shooting is necessary (like you want 3K 60p with audio) then you want to develop (render) the footage by adjusting the metadata with REDAlert!/ClipFinder/Monkey Extract then render to online format, then to Color.

I would recommend to shoot mostly in 4k, even if you're delivering in 2k or HD, 4k footage would provide significantly sharper with proper process and more light sensitivity.

Be careful with Color, I've seen banding issues on some shows. We had to use Tinderbox 3 to work through it. But yeah FCP workflow only lets you go to 2k. Lame.

hehe.

Now that you can... do you really want to finish in 4K?

Maybe not FINISH in 4K, but do I need to color correct 4K plates and send them to 2D... yes. Until now I had to work around that sending 1 lights in 4K and breaking things down to 2K to do color correction, post composite. This is huge.

Having trouble rendering a 4K DPX Logarithmic file from Color 1.5.

Has anyone else tried to output a 4k file from color with success?

Color 1.5 won't render 4K DPX while render proxie is set to High Res
it will only render when set to Half Res. Not sure that's how it's supposed to work.

2k export at full debayer is some kind of a progress. !!!!

Is the roundtriping as perfect as apple describes???

How many undo's?????

Can color 1.5 start with two display cards?????

Any improvement in tracking??????

Any major changes you want to share with us??? please???

What is Color 1.5 like?

What is Color 1.5 like?

So I have the feeling that while Color does work with the Native R3D's, it is still making a lot of the choices for you- is that still correct? Like Debayering, Chroma Denoise, OLPF, and you still cannot use camera generated LUT's / RSX files correct?

I just experienced that, too.

And no OLPF or Graeme's special half-high in the RED tab.

Oh, there's an automatic resizing for the timeline upon changing the project size in Color. So I was editing with 1k size proxy, send that to Color, then switch the project size in Color then it will ask if I wanted to resize the clips. Nice.

[I made correction to this post]

But if we can pull the quality out of the 4K DPX's needed from color that will be great news.

I have know been able to output 4K DPX Log file. They look pretty good so far.

Has anyone compared 4K DPX files from Red Alert and Redcine to ones Debayered through Color 1.5. ?

The red plugin comes with Color 1.5 is version 2.7.
