  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple Color REDCODE plugin 4.0 beta

I'll take a look at it with my scope, too.

Looks like a false alarm. Combination of my eyes going bad and my monitor dumping its calibration. The scopes say everything's fine.

I hope you guys can help me out with the load issue for clips that span more than one R3D file. I've dragged a QT reference file into FCP, sent the sequence to Color and it shows up correctly with the right length.

What am I missing?

Rob,

Just making sure that we are talking about the same thing. There is a thing called the Color Fixer which fixes a bug when sending files to apple Color.

If you use a ten minute clip and have used it ten times from ten different places in the clip, then when you send it to Apple Color the first instance will be fine and play back, but any other instance will appear as a freeze frame within it's place in the timeline.

The tool in CLipfinder that fixes this is the Color Looping Bug fixer. After you run this file on the Color Project all the clips play back fine.

Just wanting to be sure we are talking about the same thing.

Hmmm, okay. It sounds like some of these issues could be on Color's side (and not the plugin's). I'll try to recreate and see if I can figure out what's going on. I thought I saw something wrong in my code, but that was not the case.

It's a very well known bug and I really think REDCODE plugin has nothing to do with it. I posted a fix to this (was hoping it would be made a sticky) because the problem comes up a few times a week.

David

Is there a FLUT tab in the new plugin? I can't find it?

Apple have to add in the controls for that. All we do is, as Rob says, pass them the image decoded as per the settings they set.

Graeme

Is there anything they are "not" doing? What are those settings? are they limiting at all?

Rob,

I'm a bit blown away. I have some footage that I thought was unrecoverable. I shot it a few months back and I was worried. I had to set the ISO to 800 while shooting. Documentary style with little time and not allowed to light.

I just ran this throughcolor at 2000 ISO and the stuff looks GREAT! I will have to add a NEAT video pass in FCP, but WOW. I have tried to pull this footage back with a bunch of different tools but this has really impressed me.

I noticed a couple of minor things, which swithcing between output presets you can get a filmstrip across the top of an image but it is quickly resolved when moving the mouse, besides that it's pretty seamless right now.

I'll push it harder tomorrow.

Render it out Rob.

When back in FCP at the end of every cut that is from a spanned r3d there will be a freeze frame.

Colourfixer from wht I see does no longer fix this issue.

Use the latest fixer built into clipfinder and that works.. Think Hans just needs to update stand alone app.

I had this on an earlier job this year. Recall to be safe I rendered out of color with handles and that pushes the freeze to the end of the clip handle ie not in the edit.

Really impressed with having the new color science and RED Gamma / RED Color in Color! I have some old footage that was shoot in the worst possible way: Low-light tungsten with yellow gels! It looked terrible before, but now I can really make it pop!

Rob: Have you done something with the caching of R3D? It seems like the playback is improving after playing through the same shot 1-2 times. Is this something new?

If you install the new Color plug-in and have problems, can you just install the older plug-in again?

Steve: that worked here, you just swap the color plugin framework and restart color. I actually have both the old and new plugins zipped in /Library/Frameworks, and a quick hacky script to switch them...

As far as I know it happens only with spanned R3Ds (not other codec) sent from FCP. Anyway new CS in Color is great :cheers2:

Okay, so I converted one of the scenes that was getting stuck frames to "wrapped quicktimes" (I was using the proxies) and now they work in color just fine.

Would sure prefer to be able to use the proxies. Having to double my media takes a huge hit on the HDD space.

I don't understand how the Rocket isn't supported - maybe Rob could clarify? I'm guessing that since the plugin just hands the image to Colour, you could use it but the user wouldn't be able to control it, since there's no option in the app?

If that was the case, couldn't you (at least in the beta) just have a configuration file that the user could change to turn on and off Rocket support, or is there something else blocking it?

Holy smoke, I've been testing the differences in switching between 2.9 and 4.0 on both low-light footage and very highlight-y footage (switching to Redgamma) and the results are phenomenal. The difference in Chroma noise in Color is so substantial, it is of similar magnitude to my tests with Clipfinder (OCS vs. NCS) I posted here: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=556380#post556380

Sure wish we could use FLUT and shadow control, as it handles highlights much more easily...
