  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyway to turn an ipad into a makeshift directors monitor?

Hey there,
Is there any app or dongle or any sort of connector that would allow an ipad to be used as a director's monitor? Obviously anything fancy like H.264 recording through it would be pretty much impossible, but is there a way to set it up to review clips and whatnot?

Thanks!

I did this research a couple of years ago.
There was a janky wireless setup for DSLR's, but there was a several second delay which made it practically useless. The 30-pin iPads (v1 + v2) don't have any wired video-in capabilities so that was a nonstarter.

Haven't tried it but heard of running a Paralynx / Terradeck or similar thru hdmi into a computer then rebroadcast thru the computer with something like splashpad app. to the IPad . Off course have no idea about the latency. But it should work.....right?

Has anyone tried this ......or am I smoking too much weed?

Very far out of what sounds like your price range, but you may be looking for a product similar to the Teradek Cube / Vidiu:

http://www.teradek.com/pages/vidiu

They do not mention lag for a reason on that page. Going to an Ipad is not really live but a few seconds delay. Tried it hated it, and not only for that reason but also for the poor connection and the non atomatic reconection when the connection is lost. To me it's really strange they even take that thing to the market, it simply never work as should.

We use an IPad for Director monitoring with an acceptable delay (1/2 second) but it's not cheap.
You need a QtakeHD with wireless (www.qtakehd.com) and you get live, playback and talkback.
Directors love this but it's at least 20k USD for a basic working system with a simple side effect, you get the best and most complete VideoAssist software existing today in the market.

I tried the cube about a year ago. Hated it. Horrible latency, quality and reconnection speed. Directors hated it since the quakity was so bad. Personally id go with the traditional monitor setup. 7" is the perfect size, and they make really nice monitor holding/rig kits too. Once I tried Paralinx formy wireless Hd transmission, I haven't looked back! Uncompressed, like zero latency, and cheap!

The cube really is a lot better than it was. It's pretty great for run and gun.

I'll toot my own horn but my Minion device is designed for this. Has about 2-4 frames of latency vs the Touchscreen. The lower end Terradecks are actually pretty nice though for the price. I think the upper end terradeks are a bit pricy though for what they offer.

I realize that only sponsors can use RedUser as an advertising channel. That said, I think it's always fair game to at least provide a link and a basic description as a bit of useful information for the community. Plus, Googling "minion" is a rabbit hole, just sayin'

Well at present that's more information than has been previously released. ;) In 7 days there'll be specs and photos available for NAB (hopefully). As is always the case. Never make a buying decision 7 days before NAB, Macworld or CES haha.

Qtake is gold standart on features in recent few years.

I've used Qtake on a couple jobs. I agree that its wireless seems to work very well. Our playback guy usually just charges us a couple bucks per device that we want to stream to. The one nice thing about using QTake is also that you have the same person and the same software for all of your playback both wirelessly and through the SDI. The one downside is that you have to 'wait in line' for the person to show you what you want. Overall I would say it's worth the downside since you don't have to get in the AC's way to play back, they can still see the live feed assuming your production hired someone. More useful for big productions which already have playback, less useful for small director/operator productions or on location in the field.

Now you can use QTAKE SERVER, which let's you independently playback any recorded clip, so you don't have to "wait in line" anymore ;)
Of course, you still need to have QTAKE on set, which is actually recording feed from the camera and transcoding it to h264 on the fly.
